Questa macchina avrebbe potuto conservare delle vite.

American Gothic (Gordon Parks, 1942)

With this camera I could have saved … or “preserved” lives. The Story of Rand

(video and photo: Antonio Amendola/S4C)

Telling stories of refugees in Europe and around the World, we at S4C long understood that "refugee" is not a noun; it's an adjective. That is why we keep doing what we do and we keep looking for stories to tell. So we would never think of them just as refugee.

American Gothic (Gordon Parks, 1942)

"Belgian gothic" I thought when I asked Rand to sit down in front of the Belgian flag. And the photo "American Gothic" of Gordon Parks came to my mind. The first photo, maybe, that started the concept of social storytelling.

Rand is a 21 young Syrian former flute student from Damascus.

She has taken refuge in Brussels last September.

After the Brussels terror attacks she asked herself whether it is really possible to find a safe place in the world and live her lives in peace.

I ran away from a war to end up in another.

She now lives well in Brussels,

People are amazing, friendly and open. I have the chance to meet people from all over the world. And here they treat me like a human being.

Shoot4Change is teaching her photography.

"I was luck to have met Shoot4Change. Thanks to them I now have this camera"

If I had it in Syria or during my journey I could have saved ... or "preserved" lives, telling their story and making everyone see what I had to see.

The picture "American Gothic" by Gordon Parks came suddenly to my mind.

Belgian Gothic I thought.
