Delfino, the Shepherd of the Roman Aqueduct

Il Pastore degli Acquedotti Romani

(una storia di Roberta Cacciaglia)

- English version below  -

The Shepherd of the Roman Aqueduct

(a story by Roberta Cacciaglia)

The Parco degli Acquedotti is a public park in Rome, Italy. 5 miles outside the city center, it is part of the Appian Way Regional Park and is of approximately 240 ha. The park is named after the aqueducts that go through it. You can still see the Claudian aqueduct, in all its slightly-degraded glory.

The park has been protected from the wild urban development and retains a rustic air. Towards the South and East of the park crops are still grown and sheep can be found grazing. Partly due to its proximity to Rome's movie studios at Cinecittà, the park is often used as a film location. Perhaps the most memorable scene is the opening shot of La Dolce Vita where we see a statue of Christ suspended from a helicopter flying along the Aqua Claudia.

In this landscape of ancient Rome, the shepherd Delfino has been working for more than 60 years surrounded by shopping malls, skyscrapers and constructions of building speculation, and constantly overflown by airplanes in low altitude to Ciampino airport.

I was 12 years old when I moved with my father to Cinecittà and every Sunday I admired that timeless landscape. In the background of the Roman aqueducts the old shepherd was leading his flock towards wheat fields, poppies and daisies depending on the season.

Now I am 30 years old, and with my camera I decided to cross the fences that kept that ancient world far and unreachable.

Quite worried (due to the fame of unfriendly shepherds) I approach the old shepherd. Surprisingly, I find a kind gentleman who welcomes me and my camera (I will later learn that he never allowed someone to get so close to him with cameras).

From that moment, I spent my Sundays following Delfino and his flock. I listened to his story, a life protected by those aqueducts since 1945. In fact, it’s more than 50 years that Delfino is no longer going to the city. The history for him stopped there.

He was born in Umbria from a family of farmers and became a shepherd in childhood. Only the war took him away from country life. After the war, he was offered to work in an office. He refused without hesitation to go back to the only job he felt to do. He moved to Rome and rented the park’s fields from the landowners to graze his flock.

From that day, every day it’s the same, an existence marked by the sheep-farming rhythm which knows no interruption, holidays and vacations. The seasons change, the lands alternate to the fallow, co-workers change all the time (emigrants from Eastern Europe), but his life, his sheep, his aqueducts and its park are there immutable and timeless.

img_4763Today Delfino is 92 years old, walks for more than 8 hours a day and if necessary runs, snaps and throws his old stick. I ask him what is his secret and he responds: "I eat once a day, I am not locked up in an office, I am always moving and I do not get stressed ... My peers are not in a good shape like me!"

When he checks the time, I am surprised: a silver pocket watch that he wears with much pride. Besides his look, he is quite an uncharacteristic shepherd. He always wears a good jacket and nice eyeglasses although inevitably worn out by time.

Delfino didn’t attend any school, didn’t travel, he doesn’t know internet, doesn’t read newspapers or watch television and doesn’t have a phone or PC. He has found the fullness of his life being a shepherd, and gave me the honor of capturing some shots of his ancient world untouched by the time.
