Today we are extremely excited to present new S4C member August Bradley project “99 FACES”.

August is a commercial and fine art photographer and filmmaker based in Los Angeles.  As a Hasselblad Master, he received numerous Graphis Gold Awards, has been chosen for the PDN Photo Annual and received several IPA “Photographer of the Year Awards” (click here to know more about August)

Our Paths crossed on The New York Times LENS and decided to join forces to keep giving faces and voices to those that are seldom heard and seen (have a look at the brand new S4C project on the Low Resolution Generation and join).

“I pursued this project because the OWS movement seemed like this big mystery. There are no front people, there are no personalities widely identified with it. It’s as if the entire movement was behind a mask. Obviously there are specific people involved, and I was curious about who they were. I don’t ever remember seeing a movement that did not have clearly identifiable personalities associated with it, the mystery of it was intriguing to me.”

“I’m also fascinated with faces, they are endlessly interesting to me. And the idea of telling a story through a series of faces is particularly exciting to me.

Most of my work has been with models and actors that I have transformed to communicate ideas in my head. I have increasingly become excited about discovering unique people, and revealing aspects of people not typically seen. So I have committed to doing more portrait work, hopefully in a penetrating, revealing way — a different kind of look into the eyes.”

In our development of the project, we met Mr. DARYUSH SHOKOF, an Iranian activist, artist and filmmaker. At the time, Mr. SHOKOF completed the filming of the first films which deal with the current events of the Islamic Republic since the elections of June 2009. The films “Iran Zendan” and “Hitler’s Grave” were of historic proportions, these were not just films, but rather a way to communicate what is occurring behind the closed doors and what has never been seen outside of Iran. With such films, we held the power of free speech in our hands and would be able to bring this message to the world. So we put all efforts to bring attention to this most urgent matter, the team from SHOOT FOR CHANGE with the team from Berlin from Mr. SHOKOF and to bring the films to US for the first screenings. The screenings were to take place at the same time as the 31st Anniversary was approaching on February 11th, 2010, when the Iranian citizens who support democracy and peace overthrew the Iranian Regime.

Through the month of January we worked endlessly, tirelessly and through many sleepless nights. The importance of this message was clear. The people of Iran are suffering deeply, their voices can not be heard and they can not be seen. But they are there and they are asking for our help to bring attention to their suffering. Peace and nonviolence to them is a privilege and should not be so. The people of Iran just want freedom and democracy and to have the basic human rights that we all have.

As SHOOT FOR CHANGE continued to reach out to Iranian students, anonymous photos were sent to us, which indicated that we were reaching quiet far. At the same time, Mr. SHOKOF and his team were preparing for arrival in New York City and Los Angeles, where the films were accepted to be presented at Columbia University, UCLA and we were scheduling screenings at several theater locations.

February 16th, 2010 & February 17th, 2010: COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY and UCLAwelcome the team to present the films and for a panel discussion

The First film “HITLER’S GRAVE” is to bring awareness to the global problem of “racism” and to be viewed from a positive and optimistic perspective to help for the future of mankind and to build better, healthier, and much more constructive societies to live in peace. The film pinpoints many acute issues facing world problematic themes from religions to freedom and most specifically the right of women in such most fundamentalist societies as Iran. The film shows how barbarically people have been tortured, and or even raped or died for their peaceful protests against the results of the election that has been proved to the watching eyes of the world to have been rigged in favor of the extreme fundamentalist Regime currently running Iran. Surprising ending of the film is a homage to mankind, pure sense of respect, love and tolerance for relating to one another.

Ms. FARZAN portrays an Iranian women by the name of Atossa, who leaves Iran in search of 2 promises she made as a last wish to her dying brother.  Ms. FARZAN is brilliant in her role, she captures the spirit of a woman who is an original character breaking down the barriers that women of the Middle East have been trying to break for thousands of years.  From another perspective, Atossa is that woman in many of us, who come to a point in our lives where the need for self identity and acceptance and liberation is not an option but a necessity. The other two key character in the film are played by the legendary Mr. VADIM GLOWNA, who flawlessly plays the role of the Jewish Rabbi and  a very strong performance from Mr. PIERRE KIWITT, who plays the role of the German Hotel Manager.  What struck me the most about this film is how it touches upon a very sensitive topic of the Muslim, Jewish and German cultural relations.

Each character represents their perspectives in such unique and special way and opens a door to a possibility of seeing the differences between these 3 groups. What we saw at the universities were students of German, Jewish and Iranian cultures sitting next to one another discussing their struggles and their desires to be seen from a different perspective and to be forgiven for the mistakes made by their predecessors. What I saw was the power of a film to translate into reality and to speak on the behalf of all these people asking for change and to show how the future can be.The Second Film we screened at the universities was “IRAN ZENDAN” a film with such pure, raw power and brutal reality that to describe the scenes of the film I am unable.  The film focuses on the current situation in Iran and how the political prisoners are treated by the government in the prisons. This is the first film to present and show such a topic. The conditions of how the film was made, the labor and the passion of every individual involved in the project is felt at every scene.

“IRAN ZENDAN” was screened at Columbia University and UCLA, after the screening we opened the panel for discussion with the students. Clearly this film is a very personal subject matter to many people, we heard stories of families being in the prisons and of not being able to even communicate by phone or email.  But the power of the film is undeniable; it is fearless and shows the reality of millions of people in Iran as they struggle each day to communicate to the world that just want the same human rights as we all have.  The same situations are occurring in many parts of the world and not just Iran, where humanity of people who want freedom is disrespected due to greed and power. This film speaks to the world.

I would like to thank DARYUSH SHOKOF, ANTONIO AMENDOLA, HASAN DEMIRCI and SHAHIN SHOKOOFANDEH for your guidance and support through this project.  I would especially like to thank TAIES FARZAN,  it was a great honor for me to present this message and stand with you and show the possibility of how we as Jewish and Iranian women can and will work together for the better of the future generations to come.

E’ un instancabile viaggiatore ed ama raccontare dei suoi viaggi.

Cos’ha di particolare? Come canta Elvis Presley in Wheels on his Heels…Rotex ha delle ruote sotto i suoi piedi. Viaggia in sedia a rotelle da anni e, davvero, niente lo ferma.

Il paradosso è che è quasi costretto a viaggiare lontano (ma davvero lontano, Australia ad esempio) perchè pare che l’accessibilità per disabili cresca proporzionalmente alla distanza dal nostro Paese.

E qui entra in gioco S4C col quale Rotex è entrato subito in sintonia.

Lo seguiremo in alcuni dei suoi viaggi anche per sensibilizzare l’opinione pubblica sull’indecente e scarsa acecssibilità dei nostri luoghi; dei siti turistici; della quotidianità italiana. Ma lo faremo, d’accordo con Rotex, con uno spirito – una volta tanto – positivo.

In fondo, Rotex stesso incarna un messaggio positivo.

Con un po’ di forza di volontà si possono superare tutti gli ostacoli che spesso sono rappresentati non solo da (suvvia, migliorabili barriere architettoniche) ma purtroppo da vere e proprie barriere culturali.

Fabrizio Marta, aka ROTEX (check out his great blog), is an outstanding person.

I’ve had the chance to meet him in Rome a few months ago and aver since a nice friendship has grown.

He travels the World on his wheelchair. Like Elvis sings….Rotex has got wheels on his heels… Nothing seems to stop him.

S4C and Rotex has started a collaboration on telling stories on urban barriers and, most of all, cultural ones. We are trying to do it with a positive attitude, because this is what makes the difference for Rotex. An amazing positive approach to life.

This time Rotex will hit the US roads and spend a few days in New York City.

Of course, S4C will be there (with Yelena Posniak).

In realtà c’è molto di più. C’è una persona straordinaria a New York, Yelena Posniak, conosciuta durante questa incredibile esperienza della Marcia Mondiale per la Pace (che ha visto S4C riuscire a coprire gli eventi italiani e quelli di New York e San Francisco e…beh…vedrete); c’è un gruppo di fotografi con tanta voglia di raccontare di quello che succede sulle strade di NY; e c’è una passione in comune. Quella della fotografia sociale e dei nuovi mezzi di comunicazione.

Da oggi Shoot4Change ha davvero varcato l’oceano ed acquista un sapore ancora più globale. Grazie a tutti per sostenerci ogni giorno con dei bellissimi messaggi e con le vostre foto splendide.

Grazie a Yelena per il suo entusiasmo e per la lettera che ho appena ricevuto e che volentieri pubblico qui. E’ un omaggio a tutti coloro che credono di poter cambiare il mondo anche con una semplice fotografia…

Shoot4Change in NYC

Dear Shoot4Change Team, 
It is with great honor that I welcome the opportunity to extend the Shoot4Change initiative to New York City. 

For the past few weeks, I have been assigned to work on the World March NYC Press/Photo Editing team. I set nightly reviewing photos and felt drawn to the images captured by Shoot4Change.  When I contacted Antonio Amendola to find out a caption for some of the photos, what I found on the other side of our world was more then I expected. 

It turned out, that Shoot4Change was an initiative created by Antonio, which inspires to change the world one photo at a time.   I began to work with Antonio and as days went by and the World March was entering US, we were in dire need of photographers in SF/NY.  

This is where I saw the impact of photographers working together for a common cause, there was something special about S4C and the enthusiasm of everyone involved. 

Suddenly I found myself speaking with pro photographers who were willing to donate their time and help us photograph the World March.  

One of the photographs that worked with us in NY, was Alessandro Bartaletti, who was visiting NY on vacation and chose to come out on a cold, rainy day to help us.  When I met Alessandro, there was an instant connection we had due to S4C, the global effects of this initiative were truly felt on that day.   

There seems to be a general appreciation that S4C photographer carry for one another.    This type of teamwork creates a compelling story and the end result of the photographs is beyond incredible. 

The goal of S4C is to support a cause, to give a voice to those that can not speak and tell their stories.  I saw this message clear when I worked on the photos for WM.  
In New York City, I’ve been involved with different initiative related to social justice.  

I have also witnessed the events of 9/11 and the beauty and horrors of humanity on that day.  We are a city of every culture, religion and social class.  From the corrupt streets of Wall Streets, to those homeless men and women that are laying on the pavement of City Hall.  We have it all, yet so many citizens  lack the basic needs for a decent life.   By bringing the initiative of S4C to NY, we, the photographers take a responsibility to document and tell the stories of these people.  

Perhaps if we walked one day in the shoes of Muslim man who lives in NYC and deals with racial profiling daily, we would gain a greater respect and understanding for that religion.   

These are just a few reasons for extending my hand to the S4C team in Italy,   Mahatma Ghandi said “be the change you want to see in the world” and we at S4C are capable of achieving that with our photos.

Thank you and I hope this will be a life long journey of impacting the world and to newfound friendships.
