This is a nice story. One of those nice small local stories we seldom look at but that are hitting so many families around us.

It's about autism and three incredible boys. And it's about those who help the families with autistic kids.

I decided, together with my other Revela Award Jury members, to give this story a Shoot4Change Honorable Mentions as best positive local story. Read it, look at the images (click here), and learn more about the Project.
Alejandro, Alvaro and Jaime are 18 years old and are brothers triplets with autism, a complex neurological disorder that affects about 1 in 166 children in the world. Children affected by autism spectrum disorder can have a wide variety of symptoms including problems with communication and socialization skills. This makes beings not able of normal social relationships. His parents Noelia and Jaime, tell us that after 12 months of age began to be noticeable differences with other children, not attending to calls and did not show things that appeal to them or interest them, a plane the sky, a barking dog, a sweet to eat.

Álvaro of small that suffered a brain injury goes to a specialized autism. His brothers Alexander and James go to high school to a special class, for greater integration.

Alvaro and Jaime still being monozygotic twins and Alejandro twin dizygotic suffer varying degrees of autism, are defined as ‘autistic wise’, as they have very specific skills developed.
Alexander, ‘The Artist’ is a great artist and is able to perform, from the age of six puzzle pieces over 1,000 hours. Alvaro, always carries in his hands something he calls ‘inventions’, figures created from plasticine or pieces as, combs, scissors, paper or something that you enjoy. Jaime has a great memory, able to recall specific calendar dates and names literally, is the spokesperson of the three. Now with 18 years, “Jaime says” I’m going to buy a white BMW.

“He waited impatiently for the arrival of that magical age to realize their dreams: “Go to the Caribbean, Murcia go to work in a factory with my cousin Laura, cursing … Poetic license for many who have problems of communication and language, as autistic children do not know the lie, sarcasm of or damage. They live in an isolated and repetitive world from which they will never exit in their life.

The Winners of Revela 2013: an unusual - and absolutely interesting - kind of photography Award, as the prize goes both to the photographer and to the photographied social group/NGO.

Last saturday, in Barcelona, the ceremony of the Awards of REVELA 2013 Photography Award for the Social Rights Holders took place among a large crowd on people gathered to learn the names of the winners of this very special award.

It is an unusual – and absolutely interesting – kind of photography Award, as the prize goes both to the photographer and to the photographied social group/NGO. And the award is pretty interesting: 50 thousand euros to be shared by the three winners (there is not a rank, all three win the Award by the amount of money is chosen according to the actual need of the organization and the potential impact on them).

This year I was member of the Jury together with:

I love this Award, because the aim is to promote direct social aid, publicise the photographers and their portfolio and create dynamics of supportive social participation.

It’s a mix of important and dramatic social stories and positive ones that demonstrate the importance of those NGOs that work in the field on a daily basis and that actually bring about relief and social change.

Not only we awarded three prizes to the three winners, there was also the GEA Photowords Award Ceremony and two Shoot4Change honorable mentions to two special stories that hit my interest.

Shoot4Change decided to mention the two stories (by Walter Estrada/Sandra Sotelo and by Jose Antonio de Lamadrid as best positive local story and best authorial interpretation of a social issue)

Stories of African immigration and integration in Switzerland

Stories of African immigration and integration in Switzerland

(a project by Francesco Arese Visconti/Webster University)

At the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century an important flux of Europeans migrated to America, the “New World.” In the 20th and the 21st century we witnessed the inverse; an important migrant flow of immigrants to the “Old World.”

Our interest in immigration, reinforced by the recent influx of new immigrants to Switzerland following the African revolutions, drives this research project.

Portrait of the Zayan family (Egypt) – click to see the photo gallery

An impressive migrant flow to Europe has been happening since the revolutions in Tunisia, Egypt, Algeria and Libya. Immigration from Africa is not a new phenomenon. This led us to question the process of immigration and the immigrants’ experiences of it.

Do immigrants now find the process of immigration easier due to the influx of the revolutions or has the process remain unchanged? Once settled, what are immigrants’ experiences of integration and feelings regarding Swiss society and culture? Where do the difficulties arise for said immigrants?

Elena Okondo from Kenya – click to see the photo gallery

Is it necessary or even desirable to adopt and share traditional Swiss values, behaviors and culture? How is it possible to adapt to a new culture while maintaining a sense of one’s traditional beliefs, values and culture? Or are immigrants meant to leave their traditional values at the door to Switzerland?

Research method:

1 – Interviews

Ivan Iga, Webster University Geneva Senior Media Communications major, conducted the interviews with immigrants who came to Switzerland from a variety of African countries. These interviews have been recorded and will later be used for a photo-book publication.

2 – Photographs

Francesco Arese Visconti, Webster University Geneva Photography Program Coordinator, photographed the subjects providing visual documentation of their experiences.

Visconti’s collection of portraits and interviews tells the story of the long, and often complicated, process of Swiss immigration from the subject’s point of view. Visconti chose to do portrait photos of immigrants in their work or home environments as a way to let the context speak to viewers regarding the relative success or failure of their integration in Switzerland. The portraits and the interviews were structured in such a way as to let the immigrants have a voice.

Photographs have been taken with a traditional medium format camera on 6×7 color negative film. The negatives have been scanned and fine art digital images have been printed.

3 – Goals

Marie Louise CAMEROON – click here to see the photo gallery

The research is guided by our intention to raise the global awareness on the topic of immigration and integration in Switzerland from Africa. Understanding the immigration process from the subject’s perspective is essential if Swiss authorities are to draft effective immigration policies. Policies that will neither obstruct the the rights of immigrants, nor subject Swiss citizen to excessive demands, will need to be implemented.

A book with all the photographs and the interviews will be printed by the end of February 2013.

Three photo exhibitions have been planned:

– at the Photofolies photo festival in Touraine (France), September 21st-23rd (www.photo-en-touraine.org);

– at the Salon des Artistes Indépendants at the Geneva Palexpo, November 15th-18th (www.palexpo.ch).

– at the Université Ouvrière in Geneva, February 21st (www.uog.ch);

NEW WORLD

Quali difficoltà sono state affrontate?

– al foto festival Photofolies en Touraine (Francia), 21 – 23 Settembre 2012 (www.photo-en-touraine.org);

– al Salone degli Artisti Indipendenti al Palexpo di Ginevra dal 15 al 18 Novembre 2012 (www.palexpo.ch);

– all’Université Ouvrière di Ginevra, da 21 Febbraio al 23 Marzo 2013 (http://uog.ch/fr/articles/index/155).

Anlong Pi is the main garbage dump of Siem Reap.

It is situated 30 km from the city and every day tons of garbage arrives. Many people experience the begging street children in Siem Reap but walking through the paths of dust and ashes in Anlong Pi will expose you to conditions almost beyond your imagination.

Night and day, toxic clouds that rise from the burning waste piles surround trees and workers. People standing on rubbish piles evoke drifting souls as if they were painted by Géricault.

You almost believe that salvation is close because they smile. The lucky ones may have a pair of boots to protect them as they walk amongst the junk – many don’t – but still they are smiling.

Curious kids stare at adults and ask for bread, a woman speaks English to me. Some families live in this garbage dump but every sunrise hoards of workers come with the first loaded truck.

The daily wage is good enough not to work in some hotels in the city. Beyond over there they can take care of their own children and breed some chickens.

Their huts are falling apart, and although there is no sign of a toilet or a water pump, the children somehow washed their hands before taking the bread we brought.

Few organizations are trying to help those people but it is difficult change their minds and the way they look at the future.

They can’t seem to understand that a better life is possible. In that world where Jasmine flowers cannot grow, nothing has any worth but the daily wage. Poisoned environment, rusty nails, or buzzing flies don’t bother them. At sunset, nature’s noises and sounds get mixed and the landscape turns alien.

A couple of children pass by riding a bicycle and the backlight silhouettes their profiles creating a new painful image.

————–

I’m extremely happy to present a preview of Alfons Rodriguez latest work: THE THIRD RIDER. You might remember that we anticipated his intention to explore the issue of hunger and malnutrition.

Since then I kept regular contacts with Alfons and everytime we spoke he was in a different Country: Bangladesh, Burkina Faso, Chad, Democratic Republic of Congo, Guatemala, Philippines, Haiti, India, South Sudan… I lost count but one thing was sure: he never stopped.

Over the time, me and Alfons developed a special friendship built on reciprocal professional respect and mutual appreciation. He knows how to handle delicate situations and how to carry the burden of telling forgotten stories with respect and dignity.

Strong images for an importan project and an important photographer. And I’m proud to announce that Alfons will be among the featured photographers exhibited in the big S4C collective exhibition “Stories4Change” in Rome, opening December 4th 2012.

The Third Rider

(by Alfons Rodriguez)

The Third Rider of the Apocalypse, hunger, the black horseman, rides cruelly over our planet, today more than ever.

Seven billion of humans live on Earth, a quantity that is under some aspects unsustainable. One in seven is suffering starvation and/or malnutrition.

Climate change, natural disasters, wars and violence, discrimination, high prices of basic food, biofuel production and distribution of wealth…all these factors deeply influence the serious problem of food shortage in the world.

Women and children are among those who suffer most from the causes above mentioned. They are considered part of the lowest social class in many societies of the poorest countries. Every day 10.000 children die from starvation.

This situation, however, can be reversed. If we push all together we’ ll make the rider dismount his saddle.

This documentary project explores the problem of hunger worldwide, trying to shed light on causes and possible solutions…

I came across Angelo Merendino and his Wife Jen story thanks to our S4C New York friends. Reading the story, seeing the photos, triggered a mechanisms that took us here today. We exhibited Angelo’s reportage in NY in our 4C4C collective show.

After that, Angelo – by then featured in another exhibit, was notified that his photos were removed due to complaints of some visitors. Those images were too disturbing!

We could not stand still. We decided to show his work as much as we could, to raise awareness not only on Breast Cancer (October is the month of Breast Cancer Awareness) but on Love and Friendship. On how much is important to have familiy and friends close to you during your fight. A fight you didn’t choose.

This story will be featuerd in the upcoming Perugia SocialPhotoFestival and we’ll do all we can to raise awareness and make this story circulate. Help us.

(by Angelo Merendino)

On September 1st, 2007, I married the girl of my dreams.

Jen was my best friend and I knew the first minute I saw her that she was the one.

The following February, only five months after our wedding, Jennifer was diagnosed with breast cancer. Eight months later and after a double mastectomy, chemotherapy, radiation treatments and reconstructive surgery, and just past our first anniversary, we started to put our life back together.

Jen (click to see the photo gallery)

Then, in April of 2010 our biggest fear became our reality, Jen’s cancer had metastasized to her liver and bone.

In December of 2011, Jen passed.

At times during Jen’s treatment we realized that our family and friends did not understand how serious our life had become, and really, how could they know?

‘Side Effects’ (click to see the photo gallery)

Thankfully Jennifer let me photograph our day-to-day life. Our hope was that we could share with others the challenges faced by those struggling with cancer and the importance of family and friends.

My goal is to publish a book that will accompany a traveling exhibition of these photographs, our story, and raise awareness to the realities of a daily life with cancer and the importance of being there for someone who is fighting for his or her life.

[english below]

(foto e testo: Paolo Quadrini/S4C)

The crater is 200 meters deep, and the ascent and descent is very steep, with the weight on one’s shoulders and gas everywhere… it becomes really unbearable.

The miners are able to make two daily trips up and down the volcano and then deliver their crop a few kilometers down to the very bottom.

Daily wage is actually very small, about $ 15 and working conditions lead miners to develop respiratory diseases and deformities in the back.

Inside the volcano some ceramic tubes thave been added that channel down the gases, and they form deposits of sulfur in solid and liquid states; the miners – with their bare hands and often without respiratory protection – collect parts of the sulfur and load them in the baskets.

In the early morning the volcano looks quite open and the gases are confined on its sides but with the passage of time and with increasing temperature, the wind increases and the situation becomes unbearable for a normal person.

From first hand experience, I can say that breathing this gas tremendously irritates the eyes, makes breathing difficult and causes a terrible cough.

Evaluating from the outside this place one would wonder why they do not organize everything in a more human way, with better equipment and maybe with a little help to carry the weights from the center of the volcano to the top…

My story is a tribute to those miners and their Kawah Ijen terrible working conditions.

Once again, S4C friend and member Thomas Cristofoletti (besides, among the authors currently featured in S4C photo Exhibition 100 click 4 Change) tell us, together with Daniele La Gioia, an important story. And once again his scenario is a forest and it’s about childre, it’s about people escaping from their Country looking for a better life; it’s a story of drama, of HIV, but it’s a story about the sparkle of Life brought by a great project run by great people (and, yes, we can support them!
For many decades the Karen and Mon people have been persecuted by the military government of Burma. It is estimated that there are around 2 million displaced Karen and Mon living on the Thai side of the border. Stateless, and without any legal rights, what they find in Thailand is often no better than what they escaped from.
The high hospital fees for non-Thai citizens means most Karen and Mon are effectively denied access to health care. With diseases like malaria, dengue fever, HiV and tuberculosis rampant, this denial can prove fatal.

Children of the Forest is a project aimed at providing protection, education and health care to Karen and Mon children and mothers in most urgent need living in the Sangkhlaburi border zone.

Around 15 people per day visit the bamboo clinic. Sometimes they get there too late and their disease is already too advanced. With limited medicines and equipment, Children of the Forest’s medical staff do the best they can.

Children of the Forest’s medics visit the villages and settlements in the Sangkhlaburi border zone. On finding sick children, they assess the seriousness and, if necessary, and whenever it is possible, they get the child or mother to a hospital and assist with medical bills. Children of the Forest’s free school for 350 stateless children also serves as a valuable means to locate sick boys and girls. They often find children coming to the school with serious illnesses such as malaria, tuberculosis, dengue fever and HIV.

In 2006, Children of the Forest opened a Mother & Child Protection Centre that allows abandoned, and often seriously abused, mothers to heal and to remain with her children, reforming their relationship in a safe environment. Abandoned mothers are particularly vulnerable in this border area. With no social welfare, the death or departure of their husband leaves them in a critical struggle to provide their sons or daughters with the most basic necessities. Our medical team support both the mother and her children on the road to new hope and opportunity.

Two years ago, Children of the Forest opened 3 “safe houses”. They’re simple bamboo houses with grass thatch roofs located on the border. This program provides protection and medical care to stateless mothers who have been seriously abused, often raped and who cannot pass through Thai military check points to access Children of the Forest’s main project site.

Today, Children of the Forest’s clinic provides first line medical assistance, advice and in serious cases referrals to around 350 children and mothers per month.

Due anni fa, “Children of the Forest” ha aperto 3 “case sicure”.

Detroit, Michigan was know as the the world’s traditional automotive center…. When the automotive centers shut down, the people of Detroit lost everything. Bruce Giffin, a local photographer from Detroit documents the stories of these people. Some of these people have been homeless all their lives and some found themselves homeless because they lost their jobs…but even with their plight, they are survivors.

This story is in memory of Susan Brown, who was from Detroit and was working on a documentary to tell the story of the struggles of these people. She spoke about these individual human stories to us and here Bruce Giffin who’s work she supported, brings the story to life with his photographs. We wanted to do a story together… She became a great find of us in S4C and we loved her.

Susan passed away today

We all are shocked and touched about the loss. She had this… gentle touch, sensible eyes and deep heart. Her stories, her photos, her words will be missed by all of us.

Susan, we take it from here… Shoot your photos in peace now, wherever you are.

I think it’s in the water here…Detroit! The abandoned buildings are not going to save
this city…the politicians aren’t going to save the city either, at least until they save
themselves first…and the people I photograph on the streets aren’t in any position to save
our city! But there must be something in the water that instills the survival instinct in
Detroiters! The people I photograph are not powerful enough to save us by themselves,
but it seems that we Detroiters share that same instinct and eventually our survival will
come from it! Here are some of the survivors I regularly meet…

Elbert has survived on the streets of Detroit for over 35 years. He used to be a school
teacher and you can tell by talking to him that he’s very intelligent!

ELBERT (click to see the gallery)

There’s Jamal who I found walking down the middle of the street on Michigan Avenue at
9:30 Saturday morning dressed in a suit carrying a sign asking for a job. The sign states
that he has resumes with him and his phone number is on the sign…

JAMAL (click to see the gallery)

Next there’s Kenny who lives with his wife Violet in an essentially abandoned 3 story
building in a wheelchair from a surgery gone bad…there’s a different wheelchair on
every floor. When he needs to go to the second floor he crawls up the stairs on his hands
and knees and uses that wheelchair and then crawls back down…

Beautiful seven year old Brianna lives in the worst part of the city, Delray, in the shadow
of the Detroit Sewage plant where the smell of raw sewage permeates the air about 90%
of the time…she lives mostly with a smile on her face…

the month and that he wants to take me to dinner…

As anybody who can read knows, Detroit is in big trouble. I believe our politicians have
a part in putting us here, so chances are they won’t get us out of it. There is a spirit here
that can’t be denied. You can’t keep a Detroiter down; knock us down, and we’ll keep
getting back up. I think it’s only a matter of time before we figure all this out and stand
up again for good. Until then…
