Antonio Amendola

No Woman’s Land

(testo e foto: Beatrice Lencioni)

Today we start presenting you the story of La Casa di Giorgia (“the House of Giorgia”) a women refugee shelter in Rome. Within the Center, S4C has lately started a very nice project, called “Punto di Fuga”: Rome through the photos shot by around 15 women refugees living there.

We gave them a few compact cameras, told them how to use them and we’re following them around the city… There are a number of Teams composed by two, three or four of them and a couple of S4C tutors for each Team.

We intend to showcase their best shot in June in occasion of the World Refugee Day in Rome.

The goal of the project is to enhance their relation with the city (sometimes it’s almost non exhistence, because they prefer to stay in their room instead of facing the challenges of a new city, a new culture, a new language) and to give them the tools to understand it better and to look at it with different eyes.

(click to see the complete gallery)

At the end of the day, hopefully, we’ll get to know each other better and we’ll all would have had a lot of fun together! We’ll see… But now we start introducing the Centre, with the photos and the story by our member Beatrice Lencioni.

Keep following us…

Antonio Amendola

No Woman’s Land

(story by: Beatrice Lencioni/S4C)

The project “No Woman’s Land” started last year with the idea of representing the strenght the refugee women of LA Casa di Giorgia (the “House of Giorgia”).

In circumstances such as those of the Centre, I preferred, initially, to introduce myself without a camera so as to come into their hearts, regardless of my work.

(click to see the complete gallery)

Eventually, it was them who asked me to be photographed! So, slowly, day by day, I brought the camera with me.

The reportage is still to be over and I do not think that will never end; leaving the girls now, for me, it would be unthinkable.

These women, who live in a situation of particular vulnerability, taught me how to live; taught me that a smile can be a powerful weapon and that their strength of mind comes from their heart.

HISTORY OF “CASA DI GIORGIA”

The Centre La Casa di Giorgia (the House of Giorgia), opened in 1999 with the support ofthe European Commission.

Since its inauguration, the Centre has not been thought of as a night shelter, but as a meeting place, open all day. Not only a bed, then, but a cozy place to heal the wounds of body and soul.

Just to encourage the resumption of the guests not only the fatigue of travel, but often also by atrocious violence in 2010, the Centre Astalli wanted to renovate the rooms of the house of Giorgia, thanks to the contribution of “Enel Cuore”.

(click to see the complete gallery)

The Centre is named after Georgia, the daughter of a couple of volunteers from the Centre Astalli who died prematurely.

Picking up the pace of life that flows after a traumatic break as the leak is important for children and their mothers. Time helps going back to normality, but often you also need outside help.

At the Centre, the guests find the specific attention in all phases of reception, from medical care to legal support, but above all an atmosphere of attentive listening and care.

The day is punctuated by moments of closeness: cooking together, meeting and playing with the children in the yard, grooming each other with the traditional art of African women: they are all steps that lead to a familiarity that goes beyond differences of language and culture.

The House of Giorgia, which can accommodate 35 people, in agreement with the City of Rome, works with the help and commitment of many volunteers who give their time during the day and night (24/7), helping in everything is needed. Sometimes during the summer, they also organize excursions that allow girls to learn more about the country that hosts them (and now, the S4C/Liberi Nantes “Punto di Fuga” project is a further way to enanche their knowledge of the hosting city).

Feeling safer, more comfortable, is an important achievement, which also passes through the knowledge of the language: in this case, the volunteers are crucial to transform the theoretical lessons in conversational practice. The inevitable moments of pain and silence alternate sharing moments of joy. A birthday, a religious holiday, or even the day when one of the guests was able to obtain, finally, the legal papers: there are always chances and occasions to share.

In those moments, the center becomes a family.
