(spanish below)

Who said that everything is lost? Shoot4Change Reloaded

Shoot 4 Change México has gone through two years of stories, comings and goings thanks to a huge and tiresome effort. Two years in which we’ve tried to earn a spot in the immaginarium of those that live on the other side of the Atlantic, and of those that live in Chiapas’ red lands. Earning a place with those that can help and support us and in our own mind, convincing ourselves that we can actually mean something and change something. Nobody said it would be easy but they never said that, sometimes, it could be so difficult either.

On occasion our spirit lingers and one doubts if this is all worth it, if this will be the last project, because the fruit of our work isn’t always clear. But one carries on.

The Second Brigade for mental illness patients started working around a month ago; together with Laboratorios Armstrong (medical lab) we created postcards and other paperwork, we made a video teaser and participated in specialized forums to inform the public of the current situation in Chiapas and request donations (clothes, blankets, nutritional supplements, etc). Some people where interested in buying photographs so we decided to exchange them for boxes of Ensure (a very helpful nutritional aid), this was quite successful and proved to be a “healthy business”.

Along the road there we also met those who offered their knowledge and others who offered medicine.

part of S4C Team Mexico great gang

At the same time, a new cell of volunteers based in Morelos gathered together several music bands and organized the first Shoot 4 Fest festival; among music, photos and many heart warming gestures. The result was an amazing response from the public and musicians that pushed us to keep going. Most of the participating bands made it clear that they would love to come back whenever we need them.

These same volunteers simultaneously organized two dinner parties in which chefs, restaurateurs and musicians came together to offer themselves and welcome those interested in knowing the stories of Ramiro, Mundo, Mateo and all the other patients we’ve found in the way that have reached far beyond the walls of their cages and inspired many to offer a surprising amount of donations.

And with that we reach the point where we stand today, a week late but ready to leave towards Chiapas and convinced that we will get there with full hands and a warm heart. Knowing that we surpassed by far our goals and that against our plans, but gladly, we have been forced to organize two groups in order to be able to take everything we gathered and with what, as I write, keeps finding its way to us from Mexico City, Morelos, Puebla and Chiapas itself thanks to the previous brigade’s volunteers that where fast to join our efforts. One group leaves this week, the other leaves in august.

So yes, we may have our doubts sometimes, but to that question our answer is overwhelming: NO, this is not our last project. This is the end of a phase and the beginning of a much bigger one. New volunteers, surprisingly committed and involved, have found their way to reinforce us. We are sure we’ll drive Antonio Amendola mad with our new groups, new ideas, and new campaigns.

We are not photographers and doctors any more;

we have designers, chefs, musicians and writers as well all of us

convinced of being a part of Shoot 4 Change México.

¿Quién dijo que todo está perdido? Shoot4Change Reloaded

Rimboccarono le maniche e ricostruirono New Colombia.

[spanish text below]

Mundo in the World

(a story by Eva Quesada/S4C Mexico)

For Alejandra and Luis, my partners 4 change.

Light in the mountain range, at a certain hour, is usually blinding. It hits particularly hard and paints with a beautiful ocher tone the skin of the Sierra de Chiapas inhabitants. The routine is the same one every day. We wake up in the middle of a concert formed by the combination of sounds made by a singing flock of birds, a rooster, a couple of donkeys, a woman washing her family’s clothes, another one calling out for her children, a baby crying … Dawn isn’t there just yet but the Sierra wakes up and starts its day even before the sun does. In every community there’s always a family that welcomes us by sharing their table for breakfast and lunch. In our case, this home belongs to Mrs. Caty who, together with her daughter Lenis, shared not only their food but their day to day life as well. We arrived as the doctors Alejandra Almeida and Luis Castillo, and Eva Quesada, the photographer, and one morning at the table, served with beans and tortillas, without really knowing how it happened we find ourselves a part of them, and them a part of us, and our lives where woven together in a particularly familiar bond, and in that magical instant we become in the doctor Güera (güerais the term that they use for people with blond hair) Luis and the photographer doctor (for some strange but beautiful reason, they saw photography as a part of the medical discipline) Then, to the clinic.

The way is made of constant greetings: -“Buenas!” (‘morning!) – “Buenas Doctores” (‘morning doctors) – Greetings come and go in that unique accent and innocent way of speaking that the people form the sierra have. We finally make it to the clinic and people are already waiting. The ritual is the same one: greet everyone, check if you can help with something, take a look at the patients and see if there’s a different one that announces the photographs for the day. The dynamic changes according to quantity and condition of the day’s patients, sometimes all consultations are given in the office, other days one doctor remains at the clinic while the other one visits the patients at their home. That day we went to see a small girl with asthma. The doctor’s work in the Sierra demands a high level of creativity to explain in a clear way the use of medicine, to interpret correctly the symptoms described by its patient that might get quite confusing, to give enough arguments to convince the people that medicine is a better option that the remedies given by the local Chamán (witch doctor) or healer, to deal with their despair for they expect medicine to be magic and their ailments to disappear in an instant and especially to solve, with what they have at hand, the thousands of needs that come up every day. On our way back, the light fell like lead and made the shadows in people’s faces more dramatic. We saw far away the silhouette of a man that stood out due to his hat. He was very thin and dark skinned, with a prominent nose and short of stature, it was funny to see how, with his hat, he looked like a walking hobnail. And on his face, carved by old sadness, his eyes where almost shut, tight, as if hurt by the light. Doctor Alejandra goes in to continue seeing patients. I watch as he approaches the clinic and stops staring perplexedly, right in front of it. I go to him to ask if we can help: “Belly, belly”, he repeats, and the words come out of a mouth with the gums bathed in blood. “Does your belly hurt?” I ask, “Belly, belly”, he continues. “Come; let’s go into the clinic so they can check you.” “What’s your name?” “Mundo” he answers. Alejandra tries to examine him. Little of what he says can be understood. She looks at him with her big, green eyes and tries to guess, to understand what’s wrong. For her questions Mundo only has incoherent, incomplete answers. There are times in which I can recognize the gestures of anxiety in the doctors I work with, something in their eyes that moves from sadness to despair when they can’t find the right diagnosis, when they can’t understand, when they realize that “helping” goes beyond medicine, beyond what they learned in the classroom. Alejandra has, in this instant, all those things written in her eyes but she refuses to give up and continues asking. She looks at the bloody gums and listens to the incoherent answers. His words struggle to come out, as if they were stuck in his throat and Mundo despairs as he tries to spit them out. She tries to open his eyes to check for any damage, she asks once and again “where does it hurt, Mundo? Show me where.” And every time the pain changes its place. In the end Alejandra, Luis and myself decide to take him home… maybe his family will be able to help us. His house is in the middle of the mountain range, a very humble family receives us. A woman, with the skin tainted by the burning fire, silently stares into it. She’s his mother. She looks tired, she looks upset. We enter her house explaining who we are. That’s another creativity test. We need to convince her that we are not thieves and we are not here to make fun of them either. The only reason we came to her house, strange as it may seem, is to offer the medical care that they deserve and that they have the right to get even if no one has ever told them that or made it happen. Mundo is twenty four or twenty five years old, they aren’t sure. When he was around twelve he began to “go crazy”, they say. They don’t know why Mundo threw himself at cars, he trembled and he screamed, he threw rocks at people and went from laughter to rage in an instant. His father took him to Tuxtla, the closest city, several hours away, where medical help is easier to find. The doctors there, the family says, gave him some pills but Mundo didn’t get better. So the neighbors began to complain about his behavior and helped his family build a room fenced by a cage where Mundo spent the next four years until he found a way to get out. Now they “let him loose”. I look at his room while Mundo sits in a bed made only of wooden boards and some blankets. I begin to shoot my camera but I can’t tell if it’s because I’m fulfilling my role as a photographer or because I’m trying to hide behind something to avoid showing what I sometimes see in the doctors’ eyes. I think about horror thresholds and how people get constantly used to endure a higher level of pain and suffering. And I think that no one should ever have to get used to that. I finally sit next to Mundo, Alejandra is in front of us, in silence, looking. The green in her eyes suddenly becomes a blur and I don’t know if its surprise, sadness, anger, or maybe, impotence Mundo seems to be happy with us there. In the darkness of his room he opens his eyes easily and it appears that he can see better. I can listen to Dr. Luis, outside, asking the family about Mundo’s life, I can notice the tone in his voice change with each unusual answer that outlines a life story where the guilty can’t be easily recognized: Who is to be blamed for it? His ignorant family? The doctors that failed to give him a proper treatment? Mexico’s deficient healthcare system? A family that has no idea of what to do?

Those of us who don’t even know these problems exist in a part of my country that can’t even be found in Google Maps? Who? Who is responsible for a person being confined to a cage for four years, sharing his space with turkeys and hens, using as a toilet a corner of what yard his cage allowed? Life in a psychiatric hospital may not be that different. But those that are hospitalized receive treatment, there was a choice involved and above all else, there was an explanation that allowed their families to understand what happened and where, therefore, given an option as to what they should do. Neither Mundo nor his family had those benefits, the only option they had left them without answers and solved their situation a truly Kafkian way. I sit with Mundo and think about the concept of Global Health, I think of healthcare as a something that everyone has the right to receive and I think of all the principles and moral values that these doctors must have in order to be able to do their job in the Sierra de Chiapas. I think of all the values and human rights that should be truly global and of what I can do in order to help take these values more global. I show Mundo his photographs; he manages to recognize himself and laughs. He touches my hands and touches my face with the tenderness and fear of someone that is not used to touching or being touched. I think of how bizarre his name is: “Mundo”, Spanish for “world”, a caged Mundo, an isolated Mundo, a Mundo without a room in this world. I look at Dr. Alejandra and among the desolation in her eyes I see her get up and take him to the yard, it’s raining still. In the wet grass Alejandra finds a broken hula hoop and somehow manages to mend it. She takes Mundo by the hands, puts the hula hoop on his waist and makes it turn. Mundo laughs, Luis laughs, Alejandra laughs. And for an instant, I can see a Mundo laughing and trying to open his eyes in the light. Eva Quesada ——

“Mundo” responde. Alejandra comienza a revisarlo.

Eva Queasada/S4C Mexico
