Complimenti al fotografo Peter Porta e all'Associazione Casal Dels Infants

Autonomia2 tells the story of five young immigrants who are participating in a training course as personal assistants for people with disabilities.

The project is carried out by Casal dels Infants ASB - Catalonia - and is intended to assist boys and girls between 18 and 23 who are in a situation of high social vulnerability, without a family, a social network with weak connections and in need of intensive daily care.

It 's a beautiful story, such as those that we like at S4C. A story about immigration and real inclusion through vocational training programs.

E lo fa con la consueta sensibilità / Once again, our friend Anna Maria Bruni - photographer and activist - sends us news and stories from Syrian Refugee Camps. And she does it with her usual touch.

Adesso è all’ospedale a Mafraq, spero cahe ci raggiunga presto.

Anna Maria Bruni/S4C

PS Ringrazio ISPI - Anna Pascale per i dati sui rifugiati

Hopelessness from Syria

(story by Annamaria Bruni / traduzione di Ahmed Hegazi)

I met three Syrian men at the entrance of the area destined for the control permissions. They were leaning against a wall and waited for their registration to the camp. They looked like three clones; so similar to each other in appearance, even their eyes were somehow identical.

All three with the same expression, an expression of absence and silence; of those who are lost, do not quite know ‘how’, ‘where’ and ‘when’.

Above all, they certainly don’t know ‘why’.

The spring sunshine gives a different feel to the Zaatari refugee camp. The streets are recovering after a cold winter and still the temperature is not that hot as it is in the summer time, which is fast approaching. Spring brings hope, rebirth, and new expectations, even for Syrian refugees massacred by three years of war.

Zaatari is located 10km from the city of Masfraq, Jordan, right near the Syrian border. UNHCR has 106,000 people hosted in the camp, which is divided into twelve districts, with schools, hospitals, centres for women, food distribution centres, play areas and shops. The main street at the entrance is called the ‘Champs-Elysées’, named after the French hospital when it became operational.

A long street where you can find anything; fruits, vegetables, perfumes and even wedding dresses for rent. Since the beginning of the Syrian revolution, which took place in March of 2011, the exodus has been slow but steady. The influx of Syrians fleeing their homes therefore continues to pour out, mostly into the states contiguous to the scene of the tragedy, which, haphazardly, keep their borders open. Lebanon, Jordan, Turkey and, to a lesser extent, Iraq and Egypt. Two million refugees have fled within the last three years. A torn country and its torn inhabitants. A war that shows no signs of ending, polluted by terrorist cells of different origins, from the religious wars that have nothing to do with the popular revolution that was just asking for reforms and dignity; nipped in the bud by a ferociously repressive regime. What the Syrians know is that they cannot wait until the end of the war.

ph: Anna Maria Bruni/S4C

Those who have resisted and remained in the country until now have done so because they had this vain illusion that it would end quickly. Today, however, more and more refugees are aware that there won’t be a solution in the short-term.

"There is no future in Syria. In Syria you die, and that's it. At the hands of the regime, religious extremists. From bombs, chemical weapons, machine-gunned or stabbed. And finally, from starvation. "

Everyone passes through the camp, for short or long periods, and many leave it immediately. The stay inside depends on the financial/economic situation of each family : those who have a small amount of money are able to rent homes in neighbouring towns, while all the others are destined to remain there for long periods.

Mohamed, 22, is from Damascus. His father and brother were killed by a bomb barrel. When he was telling me what happened to his family, I saw no trace of despair, but a terrible resignation to life.

" I have been living in a tent with my wife for the last 9 months. I've already given up the thought of going back to Syria. Right now, I would like to have my little business here, inside the camp, selling bicycles for example. But what is really important now is to get the caravan as soon as possible."

The ‘war of the prefabricated’.

The "Caravans" are nothing more than the object sought after by all refugees, from the youngest to the oldest. Caravans are referred to as mobile homes. Everyone in tents is complaining about not having a prefabricated. Those who are living in the prefabs are privileged. Many of those who arrived two years ago had this “great fortune”. Khaled Soliman is one of these. A seller of roast chicken, 37, Khaled arrived in Zaatari in 2012. He says:

" On the 8th of August at exactly four- ten in the morning " because certain things can not be forgotten, he points out. Khaled comes from D’aara, a city near the Jordanian border and he’s a lucky one, for several reasons : he was able to bring his entire family into the area, including his mother and aunt. He has a prefab since about two months ago, after eight months spent in a tent. He managed, in one year, to build a small space where he sells roast chicken and burgers. He has seven children and all of them are going to school inside the camp. His cousin Ragab, 37, hasn’t had the same luck. He arrived at the camp having lost a leg, a finger and having lost a brother as he fought against the regime in the Free Army, unfortunately killed during a bombing raid.

"I do not even remember what it means to live a normal life. Three years seems like a lifetime when lived in this way. One less leg is the lesser of two evils. If I had not lost it, I’d be in Syria, fighting to the end of my days ".

Since the conflict began in 2011, and especially since 2012, the flow of refugees pouring into neighbouring countries has intensified in quantity and speed. Within 18 months, the number of Syrians in the exodus has increased from 40,000 in March 2012 to 2,000,000 counted in September 2013. To these we add all those still waiting to be recorded and 4.5 million internally displaced persons. Between 150-200 people are arriving into the camp every day and it is in this river of people that, yesterday, came the young Amnah. Sitting on a cot, in the limbo associated with new arrivals at the camp, eagerly waiting the assignment of tents, blankets and rugs to start her new life in Zaatari. She is 20 and holds a little girl of two months. She looks at me and says that they had to wait for two days at the Syrian border, without food and water.

" I was desperate, not for me but for my daughter. I asked a soldier to give me a bit of water and four hours later he made her drink from his glass. I hope my husband reaches us soon. I am so happy to be here, safe at last ".

The invisible brides.

Asmae is one of the 53,000 women in the camp, a bashful and important presence. They represent more than half of the population. Many have lost their husbands, brothers, sons etc. Many adolescents are of marriageable age. Considering the fact that families are desperate, it is no surprise that an underground, ‘invisible’, market for brides is becoming an issue in the camp. Many men decide to buy their third or fourth wife amongst Syrian refugees because they are beautiful and very young. And, more importantly, they are cheap. By selling them, families are hoping to assure them a better future, far away from war, poverty, deprivation and the hardships of the camp. Most of the time these girls grudgingly accept their fate and end their days under the will of a few wealthy Arabs who have grown bored with their previous wives.

ph: Anna Maria Bruni/S4C

We entered the fourth year of the conflict on the 14th of March that has no end in sight and that is creating consequences that will last for several decades. Over 140,000 victims, more than one million children affected by conflict-related trauma, an entire generation deficit in terms of education and health care, the economy of an entire country literally halved in terms of production and employment, this community of refugees is becoming one of the biggest in the world, watching what has become of their own land and who do not want to return to it anymore. In these years, Zaatari has become the fourth largest city in Jordan. What I bring back from my visit to Zaatari is confusion, blinding sun, sand storms, joy, resignation, anger and ingenuity to survive. What I bring from Zaatari is the heart of the Syrians, lost in an endless war.

John Stanmeyer (VII, National Geographic) is winner of Best Picture category at this year World Press Photo Award. The by now World famous image depicts African migrants hold up phones to try to get a faint signal in Djibouti. The images ignited a pretty interesting debate as it marks a visual discontinuity in the tradition of WPP.

Here’s a short conversation with Antonio Amendola.

John Stanmeyer / World-Press Photo winner 2014

John, first of all, congratulations for this great achievement. I think the power of this image is its iconic depth and its scope. It does not only tell a story of immigrants, refugees, it speaks about anybody away from home that wants to reconnect . A very interesting (and beautiful, needless to say) image whose empathy might tell something about its author…

I’m on the road 100-150, some years touching 200 days. Yes, I do see myself in that image as I too have numerous times been wanting to reconnect home.

It seems to me that this photograph marks a discontinuity in the visual storytelling, finally being able to raise awareness on social issues without indulging in the aesthetic of drama. You triggered what it will surely be a hot debate. Do you think this could be an important example for modern photographers?

Honestly, I’m not one to be concerned nor interested in what may or may not be hot topic to debate. These debates take place in what I call the cave of our profession. Outside the cave such topic of discussion isn’t all that relevant, and it’s there — outside the cave — where I prefer to focus my attention on.

All I’m interested in is communication, in this case, communication via photography. I’m moved by many types of images and every image selected in this years WPP is deeply weighted and powerful. I feel the essence from each photograph, often in tears.

Whether my photograph elicits intense and meaningful discussions based upon an image of a more quieter yet wide tome, then i’m pleased it was felt That was the intent. Yet that does not diminish nor negate any aspect of photography/photojournalism which speaks of reality and importance.

Consider photography as music; there are moments in a symphony or any arrangement where the rhythm and musical lyric of a composition has elements of intensity, shifting over to extremely sublet yet equally felt measures barely perceptible yet can be felt in great complexity or weight. There is need and purpose for all forms of communication. I’m not beholden to any form of expression or aesthetics.

I think I know already your answer, but this is one of those unavoidable questions. Is winning the World Press a goal or just an acknowledgment of a serious and committed efforts in visual storytelling?

It is not the intent to win contests nor a goal. It is the intent to communicate.

How and when did you You and Documentary Photography cross paths?

It happened in life.

Do you think professional documentary photography is being influenced by new ways of content consumption on social media? I see you are pretty active on Instagram, too. Is it an added language in your vocabulary or is it just a powerful tool of promotion?

Both in regards to the your latter part of this question, though I’m more interested in communication.

The future of communication is indeed connected to what we presently call social media. Whether that terminology sticks or it evolves into what i feel will simply be known as publishing or a broader term within self publishing and/or collaborative publishing. And yes, I see it more as an added language to our visual vocabulary yet indeed a sense of building the brand of one self. Not as in selfish, rather the brand of the individual voice of the photographer, writer, musician, painter, banker, carpenter or vegetable vendor.

None are greater than another. All can be an art and are a meaningful purpose. What matters is that it’s done with passion and balance.

At Shoot4Change we use to claim “Shoot local, change global”, aiming to raise awareness on social issues by seeking and telling those small local stories that are often understimated, ignored or forgotten by mainstream media. Many young wanna be photographers ask how to travel to conflict scenarios to tell important stories. How important is to focus on local and domestic stories?

While i agree with your S4C approach, we live in a global village. Whether one photographs in their backyard or cross a mountain range or across a vast sea, what matters is that we are passionate about what we’re seeing, feeling, doing.

And yes, working locally is a perfect place to start. A year or two ago we did a group project at VII called Mile or Kilometer Square, where some of us worked on a year long project documenting a topic, story or idea that existed within only a mile or kilometer radius of our homes. It was fascinating.

I plan to work more on such projects.

There is no right nor wrong way of looking or approaching visual narrative storytelling/ what matters is that you’re engaged and enthralled by the potential of the world around us.

Entering or diving into a story could be easy (to a certain extent). Getting out of it it’s a tough job. How is it for you? What is the limit? How much a photographer can absorb of strong stories?

I find it both difficult not only to delve in (with meaning), also to delve out. Both can be complex. Either way, it’s all about meandering, getting lost, serendipity and hope that the narrative over time connects into meaningful storytelling, sharing insight into a topic, issue or event that helps illuminate and educate.

This I find to be the tasks and it isn’t any easier in the beginning nor at the end. in fact there often feels to be no end given the depth and breath of the world around us.

At times it can be overwhelming.

What do you think it means today being a “concerned photographer”?

I’m more interested in a concerned human being.

Shoot4Change started as a blog and now has volunteer photographers (both pros and amateurs alike) Worldwide. People who are committed to share part of their time to work collectively to tell stories and raise awareness on social issues with all means. What message would you send to our volunteers?

Keep the passion and purpose flowing.

At VII we have a mentor program. I’m presently working with an amazing photographer from bangladesh for nearly two years. It’s all about giving back, helping inspire and guide talent.

Well done S4C in what you’re doing.

———————————————————————————–

Biography

John Stanmeyer, born in Illinois, is a founding member of the VII photo agency. Living in the Far East for over twelve years, Stanmeyer has witnessed throughout that time nearly every major historical event in Asia, photographing the rapid changes taking place throughout the entire region.

Working globally, he has focused on the plight of refugees from the Ugandan civil war, spent months chronicling the effects of the 2004 Tsunami and documented the mental healthcare crises in Asia. Prior to moving to Hong Kong in 1996, Stanmeyer covered the conflict in South Sudan, Eastern European social change after the fall of Communism, as well as numerous visits to Haiti to record the endless social tragedies plaguing the island nation. For over eight years he has documented the spread of HIV/AIDS through every country in Asia.

Stanmeyer focus is on social injustices, eradication of global poverty, human rights and raising awareness for the sustaining vanishing cultures. Working regularly for National Geographic Magazine, was on contract with Time Magazine for over 10 years and photographing for numerous other global publications, Stanmeyer has been the recipient of numerous honors including the prestigious Robert Capa award, named Magazine Photographer of the Year, awarded numerous World Press, Picture of the Year and NPPA awards and in 2008 received the National Magazine Award for this in-depth essay on the global Malaria epidemic. John’s latest book, Island of the Spirits, an journalist/anthropologic look at Balinese culture documented over the five years he lived on the island, was published in November 2010 (http://www.islandofthespirits.com)

In 2013, John opened The Stanmeyer Gallery & Shaker Dam Coffeehouse as a showcase for his work and his passion for spectacularly brilliant coffee, wrapping both entities around social change. He has recently moved back to the United States and lives with this wife, Anastasia, and their three children on a farm in the Berkshires of western Massachusetts.

An opportunity to better know and try to understand a really difficult world, too often hidden and unknown. For the first time, a dialogue with the 40 sex offenders living in the Protected Area has been allowed. An entire afternoon with them, and their thoughts.

What is freedom? And fear? Does the word future still exist? In their gestures, words, music and looks you’ll see lives that trudge, kick, scream, hold out. Words and images to tell a unique and hearty experience.]

Seguiteci, oltre quel muro. Oltre porte in metallo chiuse con la doppia mandata. Oltre i pregiudizi.

[english below]

A tutti quei volontari, grazie.

Shoot4Change at Binario95, homeless shelter in Rome (December 31st, 2013)

by Antonio Amendola/S4C

What is essential is not enough

I had the privilege of spending New Year’s Eve with the extraordinary friends of Binario 95, the homeless Shelter in Rome.

A jolly evening and carefree animated by many volunteers ( many of whom showed up there for the first time , just to help out).

This is a tribute to them who live in the outskirt of our lives and who look Life in the eye. From below.

And despite everything, they filled the evening with joy, raising toast to the new Year and expressing simple, basic, important wishes: a house, a bit of good health, someone to keep them company.

Binario95 plays an important role in Rome. It not only provides support and immediate assistance to many homeless People but entertains them through workshops , theater shows, photography classes ( we’ll do that for them soon).

Because, indeed, what is essential is not enough.

It seems trivial, but it is true. The essentional is not enough. One needs the essential to live and survive, it is true, but it is not enough. A person, to feel like a human being, must have something else. He/she must feel part of a group, a community.

The other night so many lives have welcomed me into their stories. Obviously difficult , challenging , sometimes (often ) tragic ones. But all linked by what many of us still call “social invisibility “.

This is something that drives me crazy. Why do we use that word? As if it was their fault to be invisible! Rather, we are blind. Yes, perhaps it would be more appropriate to speak of “social blindness “, not invisibility

This is a tribute to them.

To the volunteers who give themselves completely without asking for anything in return. Who have given up many other New Year’s balls to keep company to those who, eventually, only ask for some of that.

To Giovanni, who told him he still jealously owns his portrait taken by S4C years ago… And who watched close the New Year message of our President of the Republic who was addressing the Nation about our social and economic problems.

To Leo, hoping he’ll solve his problems and may get a new pipe.

To him with that white beard and those beautiful sad eyes. His wife died a few days ago and tonight he just wanted a little ‘entertainment and companionship. He thanked the “camera” for having entertained …

To him who was pissed off, because he sleeps on the train Rome – Formia and the other day they stole his phone with the phone number of his mother. Damn bastards … how can you rob a poor man?

To him who sleeps in downtown Rome, near San Lorenzo in Lucina Square (close to the Parliament), “because politicians are not so dangerous , right? Instead, in Piazza Venezia they frequently rob and beat me off”.

To the the ugliest scene of the evening: a mother with two children who asked to sleep over but it was not possible to check them in because it is a shelter for men and the law does not allow to accommodate children. They were well dressed , with beautiful colored suitcases . Let us reflect . It can happen to anyone of us…

To her (she is a he but noboday cared, rightly so), that was very well made-up by a volunteer. She saw herself in the mirror and then into my picture and I heard her whisper softly, touched, “beautiful…perhaps a little ‘ fat , bu … ” . I was flooded with enthusiasm and love for that woman.

To the best story of the evening: the volunteers of Binario95 recovered a poor man. They found him lying on the ground. He was in shock, cold and had been beaten (apparently a beer bottle to the head). They took him to the Shelter and – during the party – assisted him , made him sit on a confortable couch, covered him, fed him and heated him up. They helped him take a shower while the other had dinner and put him to sleep.

To all those volunteers, thank you.

To those that opened up and let me into their stories, thank you.

The pride of a Daughter of the King resides in the most secret depths of her soul”

[english below]

Daughters of the King

a photographic essay by Federica Valabrega

“Daughters of the King” is my long-time photography project on the women of G-d, the ones “who bare the children of the Torah,” the pillars of the Jewish traditions.

“Daughters of the King” is a journey through the voices of orthodox Jewish women from Brooklyn to Jerusalem to Paris to Morocco and Tunisia. “Daughters of the King” is an adventure that started four years ago as a photography workshop assignment and turned into a self-discovery tale to find my voice as a Jewish woman through the nashamas of these religious women.

“I do not choose the women I end up photographing. They choose me. It feels like a magnetic force attracts me to them and lets them open up to me as if they had been waiting for me all along. While it is mysteriously quite the opposite.”

Every encounter, every chat, every photo shoot, is a chance for me to challenge myself in the face of their belief and see where my soul ends and where theirs begins. This magnetism is my way inside the Torah. These women have not only lent me their stories, they have also opened my heart to my own spirituality showing me what it means to be a real “Daughters of the King” above and beyond the limits of religion.

Since I was a little girl I have always been curious why Jewish women had to pray separately from the men. Having to look down while the men read and carried the Torah around the temple often made me feel as an external presence in this spiritual experience. Why are women not ‘called up’ to the Teva` to read from the Holy scroll? Why are they to braid the Challah and why are they the ones who have to light the candles on Shabbat Eve, but they cannot be more involved in the traditions of Jewish learning? Are those differences a big enough reason to consider Orthodox Jewish women inferior to their husbands? For years I left those questions unanswered. I rebelled against my Jewish roots because I feared the answered I was going to get were never going to convince me that it was right for women to be considered different than men.

Having moved to Brooklyn in 2010, where every other person I met around is an Orthodox Jew, I felt compelled to explore the Jewish woman identity further. And what better way to do so if not by getting to know Orthodox Jewish women, share their stories of spiritual growth and photograph them? And so I did for about two years, after which though, I decided my project needed more depth than just the Jews on Brooklyn streets. It necessitated more variety.

So I raised money via kickstarter and left for Israel soon after. I wanted to see beyond the religious Jews of the Diaspora. I wanted to go to “the source” of their spiritual growth. I spent four months in the land of “Milk and Honey” getting lost among all sorts of Orthodox Jewish communities, more than I ever imagined existed. I gathered stories, photos, and spiritual wisdom. Israel brought my photography project to a whole different level. My time in Israel made me realize, my photography story transcends to women generally, not just Jewish women. It is like a snapshot into this world that not many people outside of the community know and may have too many cliques about.

The project took a life on its own, and I started thinking to make more appealing to non-Jews I needed to extend the research to the Jewish communities of religious women in Europe, the more modern version of religion, the “fancier face of feminism.”

So, on my way back to New York City, I stopped in Paris to visit with the Sefardi and Mizrahi Jewish women and I felt in love with the community of Gerbian women, Tunisian Jews who came across the Mediterranean sea to France to find independence, to learn how to read and write and to become free from their “house-wives identity.”

In the summer of 2013 I travelled to Morocco and Tunisia to gathered even more material of the Sefardi Jews in the Arab Maghreb. I completed my project landing in Casablanca, Essouira and Marrakesh in Morocco and later in Djerba, a little island of Tunisia where the Jews I met in Paris actually came from.

The idea was always the one of spending time with these women in their homes, praying with them, and getting closer to their spiritual beauty so to show, using photographs of daily chores, prayers and touchy every-day-life moments, what being a woman in the Jewish Orthodox faith actually means. The project is entirely dedicated to women and their feminine energy within strict religious contexts. Judaism, more often than not, is seen by many as a patriarchal religion. I wanted to present a whole, new chapter dedicated to the women. So women in my project became the center of attention. This was not because of their attractiveness, but because of individuality and a personal identity formed by a number of different attributes: Femininity, sensuality, holiness, religion, modesty and respect. In the book, though, there are also images of men, but they exist as accessories because the male figure is not central in this case, although his role in the Jewish faith is more often than not erroneously considered dominant.

Behind my camera lens I have tried to show if there was really a need for others to judge these women as inferior to their husbands or if this belief was only mere imagination.

In these years of research, I have only noticed that these Orthodox women are not at all inferior; they are “machines” oiled to perfection. They are the “pillars of a secular tradition” of incredibly rigorous laws and regulations (inside and outside the synagogue) that today stand by only thanks to them who teach them to their children and their children’s children…They feed a family of 13 while finding time to have a full-time job and sometimes even go for a jog in the park.

According to Kabbala, the main mystical Jewish text, women do not have to pray because they have G-d built inside them more so than men. While men have to be reminded of his presence three times a day when they are called to prayer. Women sit separately from the men in the synagogue because this way they are closer to G-d and they are not disturbed in their prayers from the “wondering eyes of the males.” Also, according to Kabbala, when Moshiach will come, the world will run according to the feminine presence, the Malchus.

This project could open the eyes of many to another side of religious beauty, the side of the “Malkas of the Torah,” the “Queens of the Bible.”

The 400 Fools

(text and photos: Antonio Amendola/S4C)

You can literally stumble into stories.

I was in Buenos Aires a few days ago and happened to walk through downtown Plaza de Mayo. I saw a tent in the middle of the square, surrounded by huge sheets with slogans. Several men were in the tent and it looked pretty stable, yet “invisible”. People came and went by as they were – by now – used to see it there. And there were crosses, too, as in a graveyard.

Curious as I am, I approached a guy in front of the tent and asked who they were and what was going on.

They define themeselves “los 400 locos”, the 400 fools, of the “Campamento TOAS Plaza de Mayo”. They are veterans of the Malvinas/Falkland War and it’s already more than 6 years that they are demonstrating there, in the middle of the square, in that very tent.

They claim they are invisible, forgotten, hidden. They just ask the Governement to grant their earnt status of war veterans.

Having been deployed in the continental “operative teather” during the war (and not actually on the battle field in the Islands), a “flexible” interpretation of definition of veteran excluded them from receiving the status of war veterans, despite the actual operation, missions, etc.

[from Wikipedia: The Falklands/Malvinas War was a 1982 war between Argentina and the United Kingdom. The conflict resulted from the long-standing dispute over the sovereignty of the Falkland Islands and South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands, which lie in theSouth Atlantic, east of Argentina.

The resulting conflict lasted 74 days and ended with the Argentine surrender on 14 June 1982, which returned the islands to British control. During the conflict, 649 Argentine military personnel, 255 British military personnel and 3 Falkland Islanders died.

he conflict was the result of a protracted historical confrontation regarding the sovereignty of the islands. Argentina has asserted that the Falkland Islands have been Argentinian territory since the 19th century and, as of 2013, has not relinquished the claim.[6][7][8] The claim was added to the Argentine constitution after its reformation in 1994.[9] As such, the Argentine government characterised their initial invasion as the re-occupation of their own territory, whilst the British government saw it as an invasion of a British dependent territory. However, neither state officially declared war and hostilities were almost exclusively limited to the territories under dispute and the local area of the South Atlantic.]

It was a dark moment in Argentina history; one of those difficult to cope with and with a very high social and cultural impact. As all wars are.

As a consequence of having been forgotten and with no war veteran status: no health assistance, no pensions, no nothing.

They were so happy that somebody would listen to their story and asked me the favor to have their story told here.

I do not want to judges the reasons of an old war, nor I want to take a stand. I simply want to give a forgotten voice room to be heard.

When I asked Luis who they were, he replied:

Who are we?
We are those who are abandoned and forgotten, those who decided to actively figh injustice to talk about that Past that nobody wants to talk about. About a identity stolen by those whom used us and who then wanted us to forget.
Struggling will show those bastards military and politicians that they were lied to them and more humbled we are still standing.”

If you happen to walk through Plaza de Mayo in Buenos Aires, pay them a visit. And ask them to tell their story.

No story should be forgotten.

Quienes somos?

Another Family is a project by photographer, and S4C Russia member, Irina Popova. It is about a difficult punk family with a little daughter. The book needs help to get published and after talking about it with Irina over the last few days, we decided to support it because it is a strong and emotional story and because it raises important issues. One of which is about the moral obligation of a photographer that witness a difficult situation. Has she/he the duty to intervene and change it? Which is the threshold?

Have a look at the video, read the story and consider supporting it. It’s important.

The presumption of innocence

(by Irina Popova)

This story started in 2008 when i got an assignment to make a project about FEELINGS.

I was wandering through the streets of St petesburg at night and there I met Lilya, a punk girl, who was completely drunk. She was pushing a baby carriage with her little daughter inside. I asked if I could take a photo and ended up at their small messy room in a communal flat, where her boyfriend and a few other people partied for many days non stop. Their two-year old girl was crawling all around. I stayed there for a considerable period of time, documenting their life and concentrating my attention on the world of the little girl. I became more or less part of their life. That’s why the story became very personal like a diary. I was proposed to make an exhibition in St. Petersburg, they came to the opening as well. The next day the publication with the photos became viral on the internet. The parents were accused of abuse, and criminal investigation has started. I refused to be a witness in the case.

The story raised several important questions. Should a photographer be only a witness to what is happening in front of his lens, or does he have a moral obligation to change the situation? I continue to visit the family and watch the girl grow older. Two years later, the girl was still living with her father, while the mother had completely disappeared from their life. This story had a great impact on me as a photographer and a person.

Besides the pictures I collected different materials related to this story, letters, comments from the internet and personal diaries. I used these materials in a book. Publisher Maarten Schilt was inspired by the story and decided to publish a book. Together with a graphic designer Victor Levi we worked on the book for almost two years. Now the book is ready for print. It will be a beautiful full-color 200 page book with a hardcover. In order to make this publication a reality I need your financial support.

LILYA AND PASHA
“OBJECTIVE REALITY” ONLINE WORKSHOPS ON PHOTOGRAPHYJuly 17, 2008 at 01:19

I met Pasha and Lilya the day after getting the assignment for the project. You could say that I got lucky. Last year I shot a similar couple that kept their child in the basement. I met Lilya near Gostini Dvor late at night. She was totally drunk and pushing a baby stroller. I asked to take a picture of her. The truth is I found her stunningly beautiful even despite her condition. Like a freak girl from Nirvana’s videos. She sprawled out in the middle of the road, shouting and singing. “You haven’t seen my Pashechka yet,” she says. “He’s such a beauty, so sweet, and his hair is totally red and spiky, like a dandelion. Come to our place, he’s probably already home unless he got picked up by the police on the way.” And I went. And ended up staying for a week.

…..

2. From the diaries:

“…It seems like Lilya and Pasha’s world has expanded to the size of the whole Cosmos and devours me and everything around. All around there’s darkness, well-shaped yards, junkies, alcoholics and bums. And we have to find our way through all of this. I accept Lilya as my guide in this underground kingdom. She is also my defender.

[english version below]

Antonio Amendola

—-

Shoot 4 Love, Shoot 4 all

Tornare a guardare Gaudiel è tornare a vedere noi stessi e salvare quella parte che andiamo perdendo nelle nostre giornate movimentate.

Shoot 4 love, Shoot 4 all… Shoot 4 Change.

Shoot 4 Love, Shoot 4 All

The Story of Gaudiel

(by Eva Quesada/S4C Mexico)

The sea lives in Doña Panchita’s eyes, not because of their colour but because of the calmness of its waters, which can, sometimes, turn into enormous waves. Doña Panchita’s face is made of papyrus; her soft wrinkles trace the path of her story. Her hands are like gloves made of time and labour.

I can’t help the excitement of so much beauty laid around the paths of Chiapas. I can’t help being moved by watching Doña Panchita look out the window and say, “I’m good (healthy) because I throw my sighs into the air”. Where does their wisdom come from? Is it from the contemplation of their lives from a scenario that exacerbates the senses? Is it because their knowledge of the world is based on emotions and this allows them to connect to a higher form of sensibility? Or is it simply the wisdom that they’ve gathered through generations and that we, city animals, have lost by getting used to live in a hectic rhythm dictated by traffic, jobs, consumerism and news in a scenario that, without a doubt, mutilates our capacity to feel?

The people of Chiapas believe that the sowings must be done in accordance with the cycles of the moon; the sowing of the earth but also the sowing of their women, for women are also planted, and one must take into account the moon for her fruit to be a good one.

I actually think there is some wisdom to this, for they must be doing something (like counting moons) when they plant love. There must be an explanation for why there are so many beautiful, magical children in Chiapas, capable of capturing your soul with a single gaze; there must be an explanation, mystical or logical, for such perfection.

Gaudiel is certainly the fruit of a perfectly planted seed in accordance to the moon calendar. Her mother remembers him as a restless boy that reacted badly when reprimanded but that would afterwards “wrap himself in my skirts while I gave him a toasted tortilla with lime juice”.

He grew up like most children do in Chiapas, full of dreams and among the corn and coffee plantations, improvising toys with whatever he could find in the mountain range. He wanted to go to college, but the children in the mountain range are little adults that grow fully conscious of their reality and carry the responsibility of their history on their shoulders. So before dawn, every day, he worked with his father in the fields and once the day’s work was over the little man returned to being a child and ran to school.

One day Gaudiel complained of a backache. According to his mother it took some time for it to “calm down”. But it wasn’t long before the pain came back stronger, and it eventually tuned into weakness. It was in that moment that they left their home and headed to the nearest city where they could find a doctor. It took long walks and bus rides and the cost was enormous but Gaudiel and his parents left home. “I thought”, sais his mother, “that it was the cold o a sprained back … I thought that one of those pills for the pain would help”, but they didn’t. Gaudiel had a tumour.

The good fruit, Gaudiel, with his big eyes, who was born under a perfect moon had a tumour and a badly preformed surgery wasn’t enough to allow him to, once again, run in the fields. He was paralyzed.

His parents sold everything they had, borrowed money and looked for help everywhere but the paralysis won the battle and took Gaudiel’s legs, his dreams and his mother’s heart, leaving her suspended in that instant in which she learnt that her son would never walk again.

In an act of profound sadness, tenderness and love, Gaudiel decided that two years in the same bed where enough to convince him that there weren’t many reasons to stay there, he decided to stop eating.

The doctors from Partners in Health Mexico found him in this stage, they encouraged him to exercise hoping to free him from bed. He would at least be able to move around the house in a wheel chair.

This is how I met Gaudiel.

We began to visit him every day, we tried to convince him to exercise and we tried to give his family back the smiles they lost long ago. Jokes, stethoscopes, laughs and photographs helped to bring us closer and one day Gaudiel confessed his deep admiration for one of Mexico’s football teams.

I returned to Mexico City and managed to contact a renowned sports caster, Alberto Lati. My hope was that he would help me get a Jersey of Gaudiel’s team signed by the players. Not only did Mr. Lati get us the Jersey, he also sent a letter promising to take Gaudiel to a training session in exchange for him committing to his rehabilitation exercises, eating properly and, above all, choosing to live.

The morning we visited Gaudiel to give him the news his big black eyes filled with light. He read Mr. Lati’s letter aloud and his voice cracked. He read the same phrases once and again; “ I’m inviting you to a training session of your team, Cruz Azul, in Mexico City”… “Life can be very difficult but it’s not always that bad” … “”I’m here for you” … “”I’m here for you” … “”I’m here for you” …

But this article’s intention is not to tell Gaudiel’s story, it is in fact a letter that seeks to make you a part of it.

In a world that’s filled with big problems, it’s easy to get lost in front of all the things we wish we could solve. But beyond the great catastrophes, and beyond the great conflicts there are thousands of small stories that also deserve to be looked upon and it is in those stories that we can make a change.

For one of the first joint projects between the different country headquarters, Shoot 4 Change Mexico and Shoot 4 Change Rome will launch together a T-Shirt aimed at raising funds for these initiatives. The first one will be Gaudiel’s. We ask whoever buys these T-Shirts to send us a portrait wearing it and holding a message for Gaudiel.

The money raised will be used to pay for a trip for him and his mother to Mexico City, for him to attend his team’s practice and any extra will be given to them. The portraits, however, will help remind him that even in the toughest moments there are many people willing to help, willing to present him with a moment full of light and joy.

It is these small gestures that can truly change the world.

Let’s turn our eyes to Gaudiel and save him from the tragedy of a 21-year-old boy that’s willing to let himself die. Let’s give him the will to move forward and join his doctors. While they give him treatment, we can give him love, and together we can heal his body and his soul.

By turning our eyes to him we will see ourselves and save that part that we are loosing in the daily chaos of our lives. To look at Gaudiel is to look at a sign of our world that needs to be seen for it to march well.
