DANDORA: AI CONFINI DELL’INFERNO

Dandora, la grande discarica di Nairobi in Kenya, non è solo la più grande pattumiera di tutta l'Africa orientale, ma anche uno dei luoghi più inquinati del mondo.

Luogo gestito da una mafia locale, che permette l’entrata solo a chi rivende a loro e a poco prezzo, i materiali di riciclo. 

Montagne di rifiuti di tutti i tipi, compresi quelli chimici, un flusso di rifiuti di circa 2000 tonnellate al giorno, che per molti rappresenta la morte ma anche l’unico sostentamento.

5Molte sono le malattie legate alla vicinanza della discarica, soprattutto quelle polmonari e infezioni della pelle.

Molti Slum confinanti con la grande discarica, tra tutti quello di korogocho, quasi quotidianamente sono costretti a respirare i fumi provocati dalla combustione dei rifiuti.

Quasi quotidianamente l’accumulo di rifiuti viene bruciato per far spazio ai nuovi carichi.

Molte mamme che lavorano nella discarica, riciclando plastiche e metalli trasmettono attraverso il loro latte malattie mortali per la propria prole.

I bambini sono purtroppo la fascia più colpita dalle problematiche legate alla discarica, molti di loro sono costretti a lavorarci dentro per poter aiutare la famiglia, altri usano droghe inalati per poter sopportare la fatica e la fame, creando dei circoli viziosi che molto spesso portano alla morte.

Negli ultimi tempi oltre ai rifiuti classici si possono trovare tutti quei materiali tecnologici, come i vecchi computer, questi materiali al riciclo vengono pagati meglio e c’è una vera corsa contro il tempo per poter prenderli prima degli altri.

Chi lavora a Dandora, ha un guadagno medio giornaliero di un dollaro al giorno, un valore molto basso per poter sostentare la propria famiglia.

Purtroppo chi vive negli Slum non ha molte alternative e la discarica per molti rappresenta un’aiuto quasi fondamentale.

Molte persone lasciano pascolare i maiali lungo la discarica, così facendo non sono costretti a comprare il cibo per gli animali, ma purtroppo, i maiali, mangiando rifiuti molto spesso tossici infettano le loro carni che una volta mangiate posso trasmettere virus e malattie alle persone che ne consumano le carni.

La piccola mafia che gestisce la discarica impone le proprie regole ai lavoratori, che vengono sistematicamente sfruttati da un sistema che diventa una sorta di guerra tra poveri.

I rifiuti vengono selezionati a seconda delle loro caratteristiche e poi rivenduti all’ingrosso.

Un’inferno che ancora nessuno è riuscito a placare quello di Dandora, un meccanismo molto complesso che risulta difficile da scardinare.

Dandora, the large Nairobi landfill in Kenya, is not only the largest dustbin in all of East Africa, but also one of the most polluted places in the World.

It's a Place managed by a local mafia, which allows entry only to those who sell recycled materials to them at a low price.

Mountains of waste of all types, including chemical ones, a flow of waste of about 2000 tons per day, which for many represents death but also the only sustenance.

There are many diseases related to the proximity of the landfill, especially pulmonary and skin infections.

Many slums bordering the large landfill, among all that of korogocho, are forced to breathe the fumes caused by the burning of waste almost daily.

Almost daily the accumulation of waste is burned to make room for new loads.

Many mothers who work in the landfill, recycling plastics and metals, transmit deadly diseases to their offspring through their milk.

Unfortunately, children are the most affected by the landfill problems, many of them are forced to work inside to help the family, others use inhaled drugs to be able to endure fatigue and hunger, creating vicious circles that very often lead to death.

15In recent times, in addition to classic waste, you can find all those technological materials, such as old computers, these recycled materials are better paid and there is a real race against time to be able to take them before the others.

Those who work in Dandora, have an average daily income of one dollar a day, a very low value to support their family.

Unfortunately, those who live in slums do not have many alternatives and the landfill for many represents an almost fundamental aid.

Many people let pigs graze along the landfill, in this way they are not forced to buy food for animals, but unfortunately, pigs, eating very often toxic waste, infect their meat which once eaten can transmit viruses and diseases to people who consume their meats.

The small mafia that manages the landfill imposes its own rules on the workers, who are systematically exploited by a system that becomes a sort of war among the poor ones.

13The waste is selected according to its characteristics and then resold in bulk.

Dandora is a Hell that no one has yet managed to appease, a very complex mechanism that is difficult to unhinge.

The Earth Day story; how we celebrate our planet but, also, how we treat it

Earth Day and Shoot 4 Change make a “photographic call to arms” trough or first Shoot 4 Planet: the collective photographic storytellingof the Earth Day and its celebration next April 22nd

Everyone form professional photographers to photography enthusiasts can participate, all you need to do is upload the photographs with the appropriate hash tag and they’ll be published in our online galleries.

 

The photographs must either denounce its abuse or exalt its beauty.

Earth Day is the biggest pro earth manifestation, it’s the moment for everyone in the world to join in celebration of our planet and encourage its care.

Earth Day was an initiative strongly promoted by US senator Gaylord Nelson and by president John F. Kennedy before him. It’s a celebration that each year summons hundreds of people in 192 countries.

Earth Day Italy is the main partner of Earth Day Network, an NGO founded in 1970 by Denis Heyes after the first Earth Day celebration on April 22nd 1970.

This year, Shoot 4 Change has chosen to join efforts with Earth Day Italy in order to give photographic and iconographic coverage to the International Earth Day 2013, by means of a crowd-photography model, a worldwide, massive, new photographic call to arms.

THIS IS A NEW PHOTOGRAPHIC CALL TO ARMS FOR OUR PLANET

(Put this way it may sound pretentious, but…)

Shoot 4 Change (S4C) was born in Italy and has evolved into an international network of volunteers that search for and tell the stories that are ignored, underestimated or forgotten by traditional media because they aren’t considered profitable.

Creativity and unity around social commitment are the two main elements that conform Crowd-photography; a single story told collectively, horizontally, in a democratic, transparent and participative way.

Earth; preserving it, valuing it, respecting it are on their own, great topics and great stories.

S4C, as you know, likes to tell the little stories, those that change the world. Those that perhaps no one else considers telling because it could seem that they won’t make a difference. But they do make a difference; they are part of an enormous mosaic.

Telling this story will give justice to those who remain silent.

Telling stories can inspire a chain reaction of creative emulation.

Telling stories can show that it’s possible to provoke a big change through small gestures.

Telling stories can make people smile, or perhaps make them upset if what we want is to show the acts of violence and damage that are being committed against our Earth.

Telling stories moves people away from indifference.

These are the reasons why S4C wants to be a part of this. And it will do its part, in sight of what a big event it will be, by crying to an international “photographic call to arms” and collective storytelling and supported by our friends in startup SeeJay, a content management platform fed and maintained by its users through social channels.

Storytelling the S4C way, through crowd-photography, means allowing everyone to say: “I care about this and I’ll tell the small part that I play in this story”.

It will allow for a colourful mosaic. It will become a beautiful story.

One of those stories that are worth telling… together.

How it Works

 

This is one of our  “photographic call to arms” by means of a crowd-photography model based on the See Jay platform.

 

Photographers from around the world will be able to send their contribution up until the end of Earth Day.

The photographs must use the hash tags #shoot4planet, #earthdayitalia and #iearth. The photographs will be part of the virtual galleries of Earth Day Italy and Shoot 4 Change.

The photographic call to arms will take place through an Internet shared video. We ask our volunteers to keep sharing this video in order to reach as many people as possible.

The photographs can be uploaded directly (by clicking the button)

 

or by tagging them on social networks, and documenting the environmental conditions of our planet:

 

a)    in a positive way; encouraging excellence.

b)   In a negative way; denouncing deterioration.

 

 

All the uploaded photographs and those added to Instagram, Facebook, etc. with the appropriate tags will be posted on the galleries of the Earth Day and Shoot 4 Change websites and shown during the event at Milan on April 22nd (during a Web and concerts marathon).
