AA

———————————

(an email of H., who lives in Cairo and who is witnessing what is really happening in the streets. She asked to heard. And this is what S4C does: we give voice to those who cannot access mainstream information, not always reliable nowadays)

———————-

“Now internet is back and I can answer you.

I’m fine and my family as well. Thanks for your care.

I have to say that things are not as shown by non egyptian channels. The egyptians who went out on Tuesday 25 to protest and ask for rights already went home since friday after the president’s speech and his promise to answer all the requests.

Whoever was still protesting till Monday, asking the president to retire, left and went home after his second speech promising not to run in the next elections after 6 months, and that he wants to hand over Egypt in peace not in internal war. He already changed the bad ministers and governors and he announced that he ordered to change the articles asked for in the constitution.

Whoever is in the square is not egyptian, may be some brainwashed and who received promises to have money and fame from some islamic brotherhood terrorists and some foreign figures. Actually, it was discovered that many of the people in square are from Iran, Switzerland, Palestine, Ireland and Israel. I can’t say that what is happening now is protesting, because it can only be called terrorism.

Some Egyptian who lives in America and has the american nationality came back to egypt on friday to ask the president to retire only because he wants to run for president and to rule. He continues to pour oil on fire and encourage some young people between 16 and 20 years old to stay with him promising to get them the visa and some money!!!!

The army forces don’t want to interfere because these young people are egyptians who have been brainwashed and it’s a waste to take an action risking their lives, and that’s why the terrorists are making use of the situation and continuing the violence acts throwing Molotov bombs in the square at people passing, at the army and the policemen.

They also opened the prisons by force and sent out all types of criminals arrested with a quantity between 30 and 40 thousands. they gave them civil clothes, weapons and they threatened who didn’t want to escape that they’d kill them.

they are now scaring people in their houses, they robed all the shops and now entering homes killing and raping then taking every good they can use, of course threatening with their weapons.

The men and young men in all quarters already divided themselves in groups and are making shifts of control and security in every single spot, taking the police mens’ role, who disappeared for a couple of days, and checking everyone who tries to pass. The check them for any type of weapon that can be used to threaten people and ask for their ID. Whenever they suspect someone, they call the army forces who are everywhere and deliver the suspected to them. All over the country, terrorists with weapons pass in motorcycles, ambulances, and police cars wearing fake police clothes and shot at whoever come in their way.

I hope things go back to normal before the country is totally destructed. you have no idea how it looks like! Everything is burned and ruined! shops are broken and stolen, some governmental building are burned and also houses!

That what I know from the middle of everything, at the end I’m not very far form down town.

Just don’t listen to Al jazeera and other non egyptian channel, they keep giving wrong information and a totally wrong picture of what’s really going on. Millions of people went out yesterday supporting the president…

H.”

———-

Spero tutto finisca presto,

H.”

[ENGLISH BELOW]

Antonio Amendola

[vsw id=”eYhZT2tz00Y” source=”youtube” width=”625″ height=”544″ autoplay=”no”]

————

THOSE WHO LIVE AMONG THE DEAD (story, photo, music: Antonio Amendola)

I lately went for the second time to the City of the Dead in Cairo (Egypt). I went there to continue arranging for a future photo workshop to be held down there next spring with the support of the italian NGO Live in Slums.

The City of the Dead is the monumental cemetery of Cairo currently inhabited by almost 800,000 people who have occupied the funery chappels were the dead are burried, making them their permanent homes. Although ranking 18th position in the list of the largest slums in the world ( of wich as many as four are in Cairo).

It differs from other tipical slums for the peculair phenomenon of habitat sharing between the living and the dead, along with the historical and architectural value of the area wich make of the slum a unique case in the whole world.

Bidonvilles are totaly absent, dwelling centres are not overcrowded and the cemetery has a tidy and recognizable structure.

The dry climate and the lack of moist in ground have made these places healthy unlike other burring grounds.

On the other hand “living in a tomb” is a case of absurdity and a taboo for the rest of Cairo’s city wich considers the cemetery as the extreme and degrade margin of the city.

Many areas have been irrevocably compromised by evictions and demolitions leaving space for more lucrative housing speculations.

The place has been stigmatized by authorities as a dangerous place with a high crimerate and for this reason it is inaccessible for turists and often also for researchers.
Ever since the XIV century tomb-houses have existed and sheltered the most needful.

After the high increase in population and the failure in politics of estate housing an icredible mass of poor people from the city and country illegaly occupied the mortuary chambers and the small rooms originally built to host pillgrims and the masuoleums guards.

Being the second visit there, I could recognise some of those faces. And I’ve been recognised by a few of them.

What is amazing there, is the overlapping of concept such as life and death, old and new. People live among the tombs and kids play on them. But always with a total respect for those buried underground. In 90% of the cases, the buried ones do not belong to the family living “upstairs”. But they care about them like they were their beloved departed ones.

What a place.

We’ll go back there very soon. Join us?

Antonio Amendola

I’m in Cairo for a couple of days. And I went back to the city of the dead yesterday evening (and I’ll go back today).

It’s the former ancient monumental cemetery of Cairo where, year after year, hundreds of thousand people squatted and found permanent lodging.
Among the tombs….

Tell you more soon

[PIU’ SOTTO IN ITALIANO]

During one my latest visits to Cairo, Egypt, I had the chance to see how much life there could be among the Dead ones…

(click to see the complete gallery)

I stumbled into the City of Dead thanks to a fantastic italian NGO called Live in Slums who operates in difficult slums around the World and that made me discover this amazing place, giving me a lot of food for thought and opening to a window of opportunities and future joint activities.

(click to see the complete gallery)

City of the Dead is the monumental cemetery of Cairo currently inhabited by almost 800,000 people who have occupied the funery chappels were the dead are burried, making them their permanent homes. Although ranking 18th position in the list of the largest slums in the world ( of wich as many as four are in Cairo)

(click to see the complete gallery)

After the high increase in population and the failure in politics of estate housing an icredible mass of poor people from the city and country illegaly occupied the mortuary chambers and the small rooms originally built to host pillgrims and the masuoleums guards.

LIVE IN SLUMS is active in drafting and implementing support activities within the City of Dead and Shoot 4 Change will make its part in supporting future joint activities that are currently being agreed.

Our approach to social photography is very pragmatic and we won’t go back there only to “take photos” or to “tell a story”. We’ll try to figure out practical form of intervention and aid.

Want to Join Us?

Antonio Amendola

PS We’ll probably start by holding a Social Photography Workshop in the City of Dead next fall/winter (not before, because it would be too hot….). Give us a hint on your likely interest so it would be easier to organise it…

——————————

(click to see the complete gallery)

(click to see the complete gallery)

(click to see the complete gallery)

Vi unite a noi?

Antonio Amendola
