I have been to Wadi Khaled – north Lebanon – lately and I shot the photos of these kids while they were being moved from one school to another abandoned school due to the beginning of the school year here in Lebanon.

They couldn’t enroll in the school year due to the difference in the curriculum and they looked as refugees among the local students. Some of them have lost at least a member of their family and some of them were taken into custody and tortured (not all are photographed of course).

What struck me was kids expressions…that show war effects… Those kids seems to understand a lot about what’s going on in their country and yet starting to form an understanding of the word freedom in an early age, that’s from what they hear and say.

(english below)

The Day of the Anger (news from S4C Beirut) – Tuesday 25th January 2011

The ‘day of anger’, announced, decreed and organized yesterday in Lebanon by the coalition’s majority in Parliament in support of outgoing Prime Minister Saad Haririi, was held in various parts of the country with protests, rallies, fights, assaults on tv crews.

The aim of the event was to denounce the possibility’ that the MP Najib Miqati, indicated by the opposition movement led by Hezbollah, gets the task of forming the new Government.

Protesters took to the streets in Tripoli, Qalamoun, Beirut and Sidon.

Baha ‘Souki (S4C Beirut) has managed to take some pictures during his work as a TV cameraman. We have just heard him and he told us that the situation seems to be calmer today, but as usual in Beirut, the developments are always unpredictable.

We will keep an eye on things.

[ENGLISH BELOW] (click here to see the photo gallery or go to S4C video channel)

The camp ice-creams seller (photo: Antonio Amendola)

(click here to see the photo gallery or go to S4C video channel)

Born in captivity. Why can't she has a future? (photo: Roberto Bianconi)

(click here to see the photo gallery or go to S4C video channel)

Aiutateci.

S4C with MSF in the Palestian Refugees Camp in Bourj el-Barajneh (Lebanon)

Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) is the largest independent medical humanitarian organization in the world created by doctors and journalists in France in 1971. In 1999 it received the Nobel Prize for Peace.

Today, MSF has provides humanitarian assistance in more than 60 countries to people whose survival is threatened by violence, mainly caused by wars or disasters, epidemics, malnutrition, exclusion from health care or natural disasters. MSF provides independent and impartial help to those who are in conditions of greater need.

It seemed almost natural that S4C and MSF crossed path. After all, Shoot 4 Change volunteer photographers are committed, worldwide, to raising awarenss on the daily crises and social unrest and environmental that are forgotten, overlooked, or worse, ignored.

We discovered, almost by chance, that in December 2008, MSF opened a mental health center in Bourj el-Barajneh, on the southern outskirts of Beirut, near a large Palestinian refugee camp.

photo: Antonio Amendola

In addition to psychological and psychiatric assistance, MSF has started activities to promote the integration of mental health services with existing ones aimed at Palestinian and Lebanese communities.

We went there.

Me and Roberto Bianconi we were introduced to the theme of mental health in a critical situation such as a refugee camp by Fabio Forgione, head of mission for MSF in Lebanon. We found out that approximately 17% of Lebanon’s population suffers from mental health problems. And few, very few of them have access to appropriate treatment. The problem is even worse among the guests of camps for Palestinian refugees living there for decades.

We have seen with our cameras what MSF doctors are dealing with, daily, in an urban and social situation of absolute emergency. Of course, it’s not a war scenario (where, however, MSF use to work) but it is a situation of great distress and psychological sufference.

The older ones remember. And suffer the trauma of separation from their land. The youngest were born in captivity…without civil rights. Confined in a place that is not even located on the map of Beirut. And they suffer for confinement in a space, after all, limited.

The sensation is like being in a giant pressure cooker that is whistling. Yet these extraordinary MSF doctors (and all the staff and volunteers) are there every day trying to provide appropriate treatment.

We have just begun.

We’ll go back there very soon and get deeper in the story. We’ll try to learn the stories of those who live there and understand, as far as possible, how much suffering there is in the memory of what is lost.

MSF reaches out in the Camp.
The project is part of a larger undertaking, choral, on the theme of mental illness that S4C will cover with many photographers around the world.

We are receiving many news and best practices in a variety of contexts (from war scenarios, post conflict areas until what goes on in modern capitals).
