“Have you heard about those afghans who live in a Church, here, downtown Brussels?”

“No, I have not”

Stories happen. And this one started like this.

Elio Germani and I came across this information and we thought it would be interesting to see how Brussels is coping with integration of muslims mostly in light of what is happening around Europe and the Middle East. Cultural tension is being pumped up all the time.

So we went to the Church of Saint John the Baptist at the Béguinage (familiarly known simply as the Béguinage), a beautiful and elegant baroque Church right in the middle of Brussels hearth.

By the way, the “Beguines” were lay women who lived a communal life but were not bound by perpetual vows. They built an infirmary and an hospice here. Then they were dispersed. But somehow, the genius loci and the “attitude of hospitality” remains.

You might recall, however, the events that took place in that place in 1998, the story of the tragic expulsion of Semira Adamu. She was a 20 year old asylum seeker from Nigeria who was suffocated to death with a pillow by two Belgian police officers who tried to calm her during their expulsion effort. She first fled Nigeria because of a forced marriage.

The tragic events triggered the occupation of the church by candidates political refugees awaiting regularization from October 1998 to January 1999.

It seems that the Church of the Beguinage, somehow, began

a symbol of acceptance, hospitality and tolerance.

What we saw was outstanding. Around 40 Afghan Refugees live in tents inside the Church. There are tents among the banks and statues of Christ and Saints inside the tents.

They are muslims and they live in a catholic Church. Some of them since two years. They want justice, papers and the possibility of living a normal Life, looking for a job, paying taxes. Just that. The basic civic needs.

But local administration is not addressing their needs and therefore they are spending their time demonstrating and shouting out loud their need for Justice.

They just ask for justice and demands for the papers as political refugees. All of them sought shelter in Europe from War in Afghanistan but are denied the status of political refugee. It happens all the time in Europe.

No electricity, no toilets, no showers, no hot food. People of the neighborhood help them with food and local cafe host their mobile phones to be recharged. They are their only available light at night and the only mean to be in touch with their families back home.

They respect the Church and are grateful for the hospitality. They safeguard it and keep it clean and ordered. When I asked one of them if the played any music to keep them company, he replied "No. This is a sacred place, we must respect it".

It is not an occupation. It’s hospitality as its best.

And a true example of how two apparently different culture and religions can live together.

We had the opportunity of spending some time with them. We sat with them, drank tea, eat breakfast and dinner, talked about their journeys and their dream of the future. They are quiet and peaceful People who live a sort of routine: waking up early in the morning, shower in some public toilet, charging mobile phones in nearby cafè and asking them to heat up some water in order to prepare tea for breakfast. Then going to weekly demonstration in front of some belgian Ministry, maybe going to language or IT classes. And then back to the Church before the lights go down. The Church become very dark at nights and during the long winter afternoons.

Their only link to their country are their kites.

They make them with paper and color them with Belgian, Afghanistan and EU flag.

A cultural blend made of both cultures symbols: the kites and the christian candles (their only source of light).

Their friends and families back home consider them dead because they live in a Church. And here they are invisible for us, without papers and anything.

They rally, they protest peacefully, they march in Brussels and around Belgium. They want to be seen and be heard.

And in the meantime they live among kites and candles.

PS this is only the initial story. We’ll spend more time with them and make sure the public opinion is well aware of their revendication.

"Hai sentito parlare di quegli afghani che vivono in una Chiesa, qui, in centro, a Bruxelles?"

"No, mai"

Sono storie che succedono. E questa è iniziata così.

Io ed Elio Germani e ci siamo imbattuti in questa storia e abbiamo pensato che sarebbe stato interessante vedere come Bruxelles sta affrontando l’accoglienza e il tema dell'integrazione dei musulmani soprattutto alla luce di quanto sta accadendo in Europa e Medio Oriente. Si respira un’aria tesa da queste parti, ultimamente.

Così siamo andati alla chiesa di San Giovanni Battista al Béguinage (familiarmente conosciuta semplicemente come la chiesa del Béguinage), una bella ed elegante chiesa barocca proprio nel cuore di Bruxelles.

Le "beghine" erano donne laiche che sceglievano di vivere una vita di comunità, ma senza vincoli di voto. Una sorta di suore laiche. Costruirono una infermeria e un ospizio qui. Poi sono praticamente scomparse. Ma in qualche modo, il genius loci e la cultura dell’ ospitalità continuano a permeare questi luoghi.

Qualcuno ricoderà gli eventi che hanno avuto luogo in quella chiesa nel 1998. La storia della tragica espulsione di Semira Adamu, una giovane nigeriana di 20 anni, richiedente asilo, che fu soffocata a morte con un cuscino da due agenti di polizia belgi mentre cercavano di calmarla durante un’ espulsione.

I tragici eventi innescarono l'occupazione della chiesa da parte di richiedenti asilo politico in attesa di regolarizzazione da ottobre 1998 a gennaio 1999.

Sembra che la Chiesa del Beguinage, in qualche modo, sia diventata col tempo un simbolo di accoglienza e tolleranza.

Quello che abbiamo visto è stato incredibile. Non ce lo aspettavamo. Circa 40 rifugiati afgani che vivono in tende all'interno della Chiesa, tra i banchi e le statue di Cristo e dei Santi (anche all'interno delle stesse tende).

Sono musulmani e vivono in una Chiesa cattolica. Alcuni di loro da due anni. Vogliono giustizia, documenti e la possibilità di vivere una vita normale, un lavoro. Vogliono pagare le tasse. Come tutti gli altri.

Ma l'amministrazione locale non sembra occuparsi delle loro richieste e quindi passano il loro tempo a dimostrare pacificamente gridando ad alta voce il loro bisogno di giustizia. Sono tutti scappati dalla Guerra. Vogliono vivere in pace.

Niente elettricità, niente servizi igienici, docce, nientecibo caldo. La gente del quartiere li aiuta con cibo e caffè e i caffè e locali del quartiere ospitano i loro telefoni cellulari per poterli ricaricare. Insieme alle candele dalla chiesa, i cellulari sono la loro unica sorgente di luce disponibile di notte e l'unico mezzo per rimanere in contatto con le loro famiglie.

Rispettano la Chiesa e sono grati per l'ospitalità. La curano, la custodiscono, la tengono pulita e ordinata. Quando ho chiesto a uno di loro se suonassero della musica per farsi compagnia, ha risposto "No. Questo è un luogo sacro, dobbiamo rispettarlo".

Non è un'occupazione. E’ ospitalità nella sua accezione migliore. E la religione non c’entra. O meglio, è simbolo di tolleranza reciproca, quello sì.

Questa storia è un vero esempio di come due culture e religioni apparentemente diverse possano vivere insieme.

Abbiamo avuto l'opportunità di trascorrere del tempo con loro. Ci siamo seduti con loro sui loro tappeti, bevuto il tè che ci hanno offerto, fatto colazione e cenato con loro, parlato del loro interminabile viaggio e dei loro sogni per il futuro.

Sono persone tranquille e pacifiche che vivono la solita routine: svegliarsi presto, doccia in un bagno pubblico della zona, ricarica dei cellulari nei caffè vicini chiedendo loro di scaldare un po’ d'acqua per preparare il tè per la prima colazione. Poi la manifestazione settimanale di fronte al Ministero, poi un corsi di francesce o informatica per immigrati. E alla fine di nuovo in Chiesa, “a casa”, prima che arrivi sera. La Chiesa diventa molto buia di notte e durante i lunghi pomeriggi invernali.

Il loro unico legame con il loro paese sono i loro aquiloni di carta. Uno degli oggetti più tipici dell’Afghanistan.

Li decorano con i colori del Belgio, dell'Afghanistan e dell'Unione europea.

Un sincretismo culturale di simboli di entrambe le culture: gli aquiloni afgani e le candele cristiane (la loro unica fonte di luce, insieme ai cellulari).

Si radunano, protestano pacificamente, marciano a Bruxelles e nei dintorni. Vogliono essere visti ed essere ascoltati.

E nel frattempo vivono tra aquiloni e candele.

PS questo è solo l’inizio. Passeremo più tempo con loro e faremo in modo che l’opinione pubblica sia ben consapevole delle loro rivendicazioni e che storie del genere succedono a pochi metri da casa. Sotto gli occhi (chiusi) di tutti.

Piano piano, racconteremo le loro singole storie e gli eventi che ruotano attorno alla loro comunità.

Binario95: non è sufficiente il necessario / what is essential is not enough

Ho avuto il privilegio di passare la notte del 31 dicembre con gli straordinari amici di Binario 95, il Centro diurno e notturno per senza fissa dimora a Roma.

Una serata allegra, “spensierata”, animata da tanti volontari (presentatisi lì per la prima volta, giusto per dare una mano).

Questo è un omaggio a loro che vivono la strada e che guardano la vita negli occhi. Dal basso.
E che nonostante tutto, hanno riempito di allegria la serata, brindando al nuovo anno ed esprimendo auguri semplici, essenziali, importanti: un alloggio, un po’ di salute, un po’ di compagnia.

Binario95 svolge un ruolo importante. Non solo fornisce supporto e assistenza immediata ma realizza laboratori di scrittura, teatrali, fotografici (lo faremo presto insieme), feste. Perché davvero non è sufficiente il necessario.

Sembra una banalità, ma è così. Il necessario non è sufficiente. Serve a vivere e sopravvivere, è vero, ma non è sufficiente. Una persona, per sentirsi tale, deve avere anche altro. E deve sentirsi parte di un gruppo, di una comunità.

L’altra notte tante vite mi hanno accolto nelle loro storie. Ovviamente sono storie difficili, impegnative, a volte (spesso) drammatiche. Ma tutte sono legate da quella che molti di noi ancora chiamano “invisibilità sociale”.

E’ una cosa che mi manda in bestia. Perché usiamo quella parola? Come se fosse colpa loro essere invisibili! Piuttosto, siamo noi ad essere cechi. Ecco, sì, forse sarebbe il caso parlare di “cecità sociale”.

Questo è un omaggio a loro.

Ai volontari che si danno completamente senza chiedere nulla in cambio. Che hanno rinunciato a ben altri “veglioni” per fare compagnia a chi, in fondo, chiede solo quello.

A Giovanni, che ha ancora con sé il ritratto scattato da S4C anni fa…e che ascoltava molto attentamente (a tratti incuriosito) il messaggio di fine d’anno del nostro Presidente della Repubblica.

A Leo, che possa risolvere i suoi problemi e che possa avere una nuova pipa.

A lui con quella barba magnifica e quegli occhi tristi. Sua moglie è morta pochi giorni fa e stasera voleva solo un po’ di svago e compagnia. Ha ringraziato quella “macchina fotografica” per averlo intrattenuto…

A lui che è incazzato, perché dorme sul treno Roma-Formia e l’altro giorno gli hanno rubato il cellulare con il numero di telefono di sua madre. Maledetti bastardi…come si fa a derubare un poveraccio?

A lui che dorme in centro, vicino San Lorenzo in Lucina, “perché tanto i politici non sono pericolosi, vero? Invece a piazza Venezia mi picchiano e derubano spesso”.

Alla scena più brutta della serata: una mamma con due bambini che chiedeva di dormire ma non è stato possibile accoglierla, perché è un centro maschile e la legge non consente di accogliere anche i minori. Erano vestiti bene, molto dignitosi, con delle belle valigie colorate. Riflettiamo. Può succedere a chiunque di noi…

A lei, che poi è lui ma a nessuno giustamente importa nulla, che è stata truccata benissimo da una volontaria. Si è vista nello specchio e poi in una foto e l’ho sentita sussurrare tra lei e lei, quasi commossa, “bella…un po’ grassa però…”. Mi ha inondato di entusiasmo quella donna.

Alla storia più bella della serata: i volontari di Binario95 hanno recuperato un povero signore, per terra, per strada. Era sotto shock, aveva freddo ed era stato malmenato (pare una bottigliata in testa). L’hanno portato al centro e – durante la festa – lo hanno assistito, fatto accomodare, coperto e riscaldato. Gli hanno dato da mangiare. Gli hanno fatto una doccia mentre gli altri cenavano e lo hanno messo a dormire.

A tutti quei volontari, grazie.

A loro che si sono aperti, e che mi hanno fatto entrare nelle loro storie, grazie.

Shoot4Change at Binario95, homeless shelter in Rome (December 31st, 2013)

What is essential is not enough

I had the privilege of spending New Year’s Eve with the extraordinary friends of Binario 95, the homeless Shelter in Rome.

A jolly evening and carefree animated by many volunteers ( many of whom showed up there for the first time , just to help out).

This is a tribute to them who live in the outskirt of our lives and who look Life in the eye. From below.

And despite everything, they filled the evening with joy, raising toast to the new Year and expressing simple, basic, important wishes: a house, a bit of good health, someone to keep them company.

Binario95 plays an important role in Rome. It not only provides support and immediate assistance to many homeless People but entertains them through workshops , theater shows, photography classes ( we’ll do that for them soon).

Because, indeed, what is essential is not enough.

It seems trivial, but it is true. The essentional is not enough. One needs the essential to live and survive, it is true, but it is not enough. A person, to feel like a human being, must have something else. He/she must feel part of a group, a community.

The other night so many lives have welcomed me into their stories. Obviously difficult , challenging , sometimes (often ) tragic ones. But all linked by what many of us still call “social invisibility “.

This is something that drives me crazy. Why do we use that word? As if it was their fault to be invisible! Rather, we are blind. Yes, perhaps it would be more appropriate to speak of “social blindness “, not invisibility

This is a tribute to them.

To the volunteers who give themselves completely without asking for anything in return. Who have given up many other New Year’s balls to keep company to those who, eventually, only ask for some of that.

To Giovanni, who told him he still jealously owns his portrait taken by S4C years ago… And who watched close the New Year message of our President of the Republic who was addressing the Nation about our social and economic problems.

To Leo, hoping he’ll solve his problems and may get a new pipe.

To him with that white beard and those beautiful sad eyes. His wife died a few days ago and tonight he just wanted a little ‘entertainment and companionship. He thanked the “camera” for having entertained …

To him who was pissed off, because he sleeps on the train Rome – Formia and the other day they stole his phone with the phone number of his mother. Damn bastards … how can you rob a poor man?

To him who sleeps in downtown Rome, near San Lorenzo in Lucina Square (close to the Parliament), “because politicians are not so dangerous , right? Instead, in Piazza Venezia they frequently rob and beat me off”.

To the the ugliest scene of the evening: a mother with two children who asked to sleep over but it was not possible to check them in because it is a shelter for men and the law does not allow to accommodate children. They were well dressed , with beautiful colored suitcases . Let us reflect . It can happen to anyone of us…

To her (she is a he but noboday cared, rightly so), that was very well made-up by a volunteer. She saw herself in the mirror and then into my picture and I heard her whisper softly, touched, “beautiful…perhaps a little ‘ fat , bu … ” . I was flooded with enthusiasm and love for that woman.

To the best story of the evening: the volunteers of Binario95 recovered a poor man. They found him lying on the ground. He was in shock, cold and had been beaten (apparently a beer bottle to the head). They took him to the Shelter and – during the party – assisted him , made him sit on a confortable couch, covered him, fed him and heated him up. They helped him take a shower while the other had dinner and put him to sleep.

To all those volunteers, thank you.

Veteranos: los 400 locos – the 400 Fools

You can literally stumble into stories.

I was in Buenos Aires a few days ago and happened to walk through downtown Plaza de Mayo. I saw a tent in the middle of the square, surrounded by huge sheets with slogans. Several men were in the tent and it looked pretty stable, yet “invisible”. People came and went by as they were – by now – used to see it there. And there were crosses, too, as in a graveyard.

Curious as I am, I approached a guy in front of the tent and asked who they were and what was going on.

They define themeselves “los 400 locos”, the 400 fools, of the “Campamento TOAS Plaza de Mayo”. They are veterans of the Malvinas/Falkland War and it’s already more than 6 years that they are demonstrating there, in the middle of the square, in that very tent.

They claim they are invisible, forgotten, hidden. They just ask the Governement to grant their earnt status of war veterans.

Having been deployed in the continental “operative teather” during the war (and not actually on the battle field in the Islands), a “flexible” interpretation of definition of veteran excluded them from receiving the status of war veterans, despite the actual operation, missions, etc.

[from Wikipedia: The Falklands/Malvinas War was a 1982 war between Argentina and the United Kingdom. The conflict resulted from the long-standing dispute over the sovereignty of the Falkland Islands and South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands, which lie in theSouth Atlantic, east of Argentina.

The resulting conflict lasted 74 days and ended with the Argentine surrender on 14 June 1982, which returned the islands to British control. During the conflict, 649 Argentine military personnel, 255 British military personnel and 3 Falkland Islanders died.

he conflict was the result of a protracted historical confrontation regarding the sovereignty of the islands. Argentina has asserted that the Falkland Islands have been Argentinian territory since the 19th century and, as of 2013, has not relinquished the claim.^[6]^[7]^[8] The claim was added to the Argentine constitution after its reformation in 1994.^[9] As such, the Argentine government characterised their initial invasion as the re-occupation of their own territory, whilst the British government saw it as an invasion of a British dependent territory. However, neither state officially declared war and hostilities were almost exclusively limited to the territories under dispute and the local area of the South Atlantic.]

It was a dark moment in Argentina history; one of those difficult to cope with and with a very high social and cultural impact. As all wars are.

As a consequence of having been forgotten and with no war veteran status: no health assistance, no pensions, no nothing.

They were so happy that somebody would listen to their story and asked me the favor to have their story told here.

I do not want to judges the reasons of an old war, nor I want to take a stand. I simply want to give a forgotten voice room to be heard.

When I asked Luis who they were, he replied:

Who are we?
We are those who are abandoned and forgotten, those who decided to actively figh injustice to talk about that Past that nobody wants to talk about. About a identity stolen by those whom used us and who then wanted us to forget.
Struggling will show those bastards military and politicians that they were lied to them and more humbled we are still standing.”

If you happen to walk through Plaza de Mayo in Buenos Aires, pay them a visit. And ask them to tell their story.

No story should be forgotten.

CAMPAMENTO TOAS PLAZA DE MAYO, 400 LOCOS

Veteranos de Guerra del conflicto del Atlántico Sur- Guerra de Malvinas

Quienes somos?

Somos esos que siguen abandonados y olvidados, esos que decidimos que solo luchando activamente podremos demostrar la injusticia de aquel pasado del que nadie quiere hablar. De una identidad robada por quienes nos llevaron, usaron y de quienes luego nos quisieron olvidar.
Luchando le demostraremos a esos sinvergüenzas de militares y políticos que los que mintieron fueron ellos y por mas que nos humillaron seguimos de pie, porque solo se llega a la victoria con sacrificio, exposición y trabajo. De quienes fuimos, somos, que tenemos nombre y apellido que nos enorgullece gritar “CAMPAMENTO TOAS PLAZA DE MAYO, 400 LOCOS”

Hace casi 6 años que decidimos plantar bandera en Plaza de Mayo para concientizar a un pueblo de esa parte de la historia que quieren seguir ocultando de los que fuimos participes directos del Conflicto del Atlántico Sur.

Trabajamos en la búsqueda de la documentación, libros de guerra, ordenes operacionales, libro del plan esquemático etc. etc. Que se habían encargado de desaparecer, eso avalo lo que venimos sosteniendo hace mas de veinte años, ya no con nuestras palabras, sino la del propio enemigo reconociendo sus misiones para hacer volar las bases aéreas de donde se los atacaba y mayor daño se le ocasiono en Río Grande, Río Gallego, San Julián y Comodoro Rivadavia mas la verdad del informe Rattenbach que mando a desclasificar la Presidenta que habla de la incursiones enemigas en el continente.

La lucha activa dio lugar a que seamos apoyados por todos los organismos de DDHH , la Liga Argentina por los derechos del hombre, APDH, SERPAJ, Adolfo Pérez Esquivel (Premio novel de la Paz) Madres L f y Abuelas de Plaza de Mayo, La asociación de abogados de la ciudad de Bs. As, Juan Carr de Red Solidaria, La Iglesia Católica, Cardenal Bergoglio (hoy Papa) y muchas Organizaciones mas. También así logramos que la asociación mas antigua de ex combatientes del mundo ARAC de Francia en Febrero del 2011 donde se reunieron todos los ex combatientes del mundo elaborara un dictamen pidiendo se nos reconozcan e incluyan en las leyes de Veteranos de Guerra y se lo elevara a nuestra Presidenta, Ministros y Presidentes de ambas cámaras del Congreso, dictamen que reiteran en el 2012 incluyendo el apoyo de la Federación mundial de ex combatientes.

Dos Ministerios trabajaron mas el EMCO (Estado Mayor Conjunto) cuyo resultado dio el padrón que nos devuelve la identidad que nos robaron de que fuimos participes directo del conflicto, por eso están reconocidas 17 bajas en el continente como héroes nacionales por Malvinas y la justicia Argentina así lo esta entendiendo fallando a favor en los juicios.

Terminado el trabajo hace casi 2 años los organismos DDHH enviaron un pronto despacho (que lleva un año) para que el Estado tome la determinación de enmendar el grave error que se cometió con nosotros.

Por eso seguiremos en esa plaza emblemática LUCHANDO esperando lo que nos CORRESPONDE, CORRESPONDE y nos negaron.

Revealing Revela: a very special photo competition

Last saturday, in Barcelona, the ceremony of the Awards of REVELA 2013 Photography Award for the Social Rights Holders took place among a large crowd on people gathered to learn the names of the winners of this very special award.

It is an unusual – and absolutely interesting – kind of photography Award, as the prize goes both to the photographer and to the photographied social group/NGO. And the award is pretty interesting: 50 thousand euros to be shared by the three winners (there is not a rank, all three win the Award by the amount of money is chosen according to the actual need of the organization and the potential impact on them).

This year I was member of the Jury together with:

Ângela Ferreira, director/curator of the Portuguese PhotoFestival Encontros da Imagem
José Antonio Bastos, president of MSF Spain (Doctors without Borders)
Stephen Burgen, journalist
Javier Bauluz, director of Periodismohumano (Human Journalism) and Pulitzer Prize winner

I love this Award, because the aim is to promote direct social aid, publicise the photographers and their portfolio and create dynamics of supportive social participation.

It’s a mix of important and dramatic social stories and positive ones that demonstrate the importance of those NGOs that work in the field on a daily basis and that actually bring about relief and social change.

Not only we awarded three prizes to the three winners, there was also the GEA Photowords Award Ceremony and two Shoot4Change honorable mentions to two special stories that hit my interest.

Shoot4Change decided to mention the two stories (by Walter Estrada/Sandra Sotelo and by Jose Antonio de Lamadrid as best positive local story and best authorial interpretation of a social issue)

So, there we go. Here they are. You can click the links and learn more and in the following days we’ll feature them individually here.

These are stories worth be told.

Ho visto un camper carico di…

Idee.

Parto dalla fine. Anche se avrei dovuto dire “un camper che si prepara a caricarsi di idee”.

Bene, svelato il finale, riparto molto brevemente dall’inizio.

Riccardo Luna e Gianluca Dettori hanno comprato il camper di Matteo Renzi per cercare l’innovazione porta a porta, in giro per l’Italia [cliccate qui per leggere l’articolo di Gianluca Dettori su CheFuturo]

Sono andato a Firenze per capire cosa hanno in mente quei due e, ieri, sono andato nel garage romano dove alcuni giovani creativi stanno rifacendo bello il Camper che, da domani, diventerà…il BarCamper e verrà riutilizzato per girare città e Università alla ricerca di startup innovative con lo StartupItalia! Barcamper Tour.

I 30.000 euro della vendita del camper, sono stati devoluti alla Onlus Tommasino Bacciotti, una fondazione che dal 2010 si occupa di assistere le famiglie che vengono a Firenze all’ospedale Mayer, fornendo gratuitamente case accoglienza che consentono alle famiglie di stare vicini ai bambini lungodegenti del reparto di Neurochirurgia.

L’auspicio di Luna e Dettori è che l’Italia diventi davvero la migliore startup del mondo. Ci sono tante idee da coltivare, tanti giovani da valorizzare.

Aggiungo che è anche arrivato il momento di dare il giusto significato alla parola “valorizzare”, evitando derive populistiche che premiano l’incompetenza e l’inesperienza al posto del lavoro duro, dello studio, dell’impegno sociale.

Così come sono tante le piccole storie che vengono sistematicamente dimenticate o ignorate nel nostro Paese, sono anche tante le piccole grandi idee che sarebbe umiliante per l’Italia non valorizzare.

Ieri quindi sono andato a vedere. Perchè sono curioso. E perchè ritengo che anche i gesti, i simboli, siano importanti.

Ho visto tre ragazzi fare notte per rimettere a nuovo un camper, colorandolo e preparandolo ad un viaggio che anche noi di S4C cercheremo di raccontare.

Spero di poter contare su di voi e sui vostri racconti delle tante tappe che farà in Italia.

Workshop S4C in Sardegna: sul raccontare storie

Ritornano i workshop fotografici di Shoot4Change (con il patrocinio di Nital)

Si comincia il 2013 con “Raccontare Storie”: workshop Fotografico con Antonio Amendola (fondatore di Shoot4Change) dall’1 al 3 marzo 2013 in Sardegna.

Un weekend di full immersion per parlare dell’evoluzione dello storytelling fotografico (ma anche multimediale) e applicare sul
campo le nozioni discusse: dalla costruzione della storia alla realizzazione del prodotto che si svilupperà intorno al racconto
di due storie locali nel tipico stile di Shoot4Change.

L’Oasi sensoriale L’Essenza, che ospiterà il workshop, è la cornice ideale per concentrarsi sui temi assegnati e per fungere da base per la scoperta di un territorio affascinante e ricco di storie umane poco conosciute.

ore 15-19 Workshop: Editing del materiale raccolto e produzione del reportage.

Fuori dagli orari del workshop sarà possibile effettuare letture del portfolio dei partecipanti sia su supporto cartaceo che elettronico.

Il prezzo del pacchetto è di 200€ a persona e include:

– il workshop con Antonio Amendola
– 2 pernottamenti in b&b (venerdì notte e sabato notte)
– 2 colazioni (sabato mattina e domenica mattina)

Data la natura del workshop e la splendida logistica della struttura ospitante, il format sarà assolutamente informale e tutti gli spazi e momenti liberi potranno essere occupati per la condivisione del lavoro svolto e per approfondire altre tematiche su richiesta dei partecipanti.

Al termine sarà rilasciato un attestato di partecipazione.

Rotellando in ItaliaRotellando in Italia

Non vedevo Rotex (Fabrizio Marta) dall’inizio dell’avventura di Shoot4Change. Ci siamo conosciuti attraverso i nostri blog di viaggio.

Anche lui viene da una ‘vecchia’ storia di blog di viaggi incredibili. Rotex gira il mondo sulla sedia a rotelle, raccontando storie in un modo tutto suo. Bellissimo.

Ora, Rotex sta rotellando in giro per l’Italia con l’amico, fotografo, Vito Raho e oggi ci siamo incrociati velocemente a Roma.

E’ stata un’occasione per fare due chiacchiere e sapere qualcosa su questo particolarissimo viaggio che potete seguire su Vanity Fair (http://rotellando.vanityfair.it) e su Facebook.

L’ironia è quella di sempre. La coppia di viaggiatori è ben assortita (Fabrizio è di Domodossola e Vito – ribattezzato Reflex – è di Santa Maria di Leuca nel Salento).

Come dicono loro, la loro meta non è mai un luogo ma un nuovo modo di vedere le cose.

E questo a noi piace tanto, no?

Con Stefano Pesarelli, Francesca Guazzo e Marco Resti ci conosciamo ormai da tanto tempo.

Un’amicizia ed una stima nate e coltivate online, su Facebook, attraverso S4C e le attività (sempre in remoto) che ci hanno visto al fianco in questi anni. Oggi ci siamo incontrati per la prima volta.

Ed è sempre magnifico constatare la bellezza delle connessioni creative che Internet favorisce. Fuor di metafora, è vero. D’accordo, si dice “simili con simili”.

Ma se non fosse per Internet, dite quel che volete, non sarebbe possibile. Prossima tappa: Malawi! Vero Stefano e Francesca?

Organizzeremo un workshop S4C con Africa Wildtruck di Stefano e Francesca che conoscono quei posti come pochi…

S4C de luxe?

Tanto per non perdere le buone vecchie abitudini....

Estate intensa tra storie da leggere, scoprire e progettare. E con la nostra prima mostra collettiva in arrivo! Mi raccomando, segnate il 16 settembre in agenda. Tra qualche giorno ne riparleremo meglio…

Sto passando comunque qualche giorno in Puglia, a Martina Franca. E tra un incontro e l’altro, ho conosciuto Stefania Zizzi del noto blog Une Histoire de Luxe.

Due mondi solo apparentemente distanti ma in realtà accomunati dall’interesse per uno storytelling emozionale ed intenso.

Ne è nata una chiacchierata estiva tra i trulli della Valle d’Itria.

Liberi Nantes con un iPhone – considerazioni su dove stiamo andando

Ieri i Liberi Nantes hanno giocato una partita ufficiale del loro Campionato, contro la squadra dell’Università Luiss. Il risultato non è importante (ok, hanno perso, ma non importa) anche perchè le condizioni disastrate del loro “nuovo” campo (il XXV aprile) non consentono di allenarsi…

La giornata dei LN era cominciata bene e con una novità: l’arrivo della prima lavatrice! Finalmente potranno accelerare le fasi di lavaggio delle uniformi e della biancheria. Un’innovazione normalmente banale ma che per i LN rappresenta una vera svolta.

Arrivati al campo che avrebbe ospitato la partita ho deciso di sperimentare e lasciare la macchina fotografica in panchina. Ho usato solo un iPhone.

Il risultato è stato interessante e, probabilmente, riuscito.

Caso vuole che proprio ieri (al rientro dalla partita) diverse persone mi abbiano segnalato un bellissimo articolo sul blog fotografico del NY Times proprio sull’evoluzione del reportage fotografico e l’impatto causato dagli smartphone e software tipo Hisptamatic (Damon Winter ha vinto un premio proprio così).

Prevedibilmente, il mondo dei fotografi (ma non solo) – già caratterizzato da una fortissima tendenza alla perfetta bipolarizzazione manichea (analogico/digitale, nikon/canon, colore/bianco e nero) – è in fermento.

Le domande sono quelle poste correttamente dall’articolo in questione (e che vi invito a leggere attentamente e conservare; se ne riparlerà sempre di più): un servizio realizzato con l’iPhone è un vero reportage? Un software di editing automatico toglie spontaneità e creatività al “fotografo”? E’ vera fotografia?

Per certi versi io sono un geek, lo ammetto. Amo le evoluzioni della tecnica e tutti i gadget moderni (e vivo, di fatto, online). Per altri sono molto attaccato alla fotografia tradizionale (scatto tanto con una vecchia F2 ed una magnifica Rolleiflex).

Due mondi apparentemente inconciliabili ma che, secondo me, trovano oggi la loro squisita sintesi. Pertanto mi schiero. In favore dell’iphone (ma non è un endorsement di marca! uno vale l’altro) e delle nuove forme di reportage.

Paradossalmente, se è vero che l’uso di sw automatici (o apparentemente tali, perchè poi si tratta di capire BENE come funzionano e come sfruttarli al meglio in ogni condizione di luce) danno risultati simili in tutto e per tutto a quanto esce da una buona Rolleiflex o Hasselblad senza muovere un dito…..dall’altro si supera la bulimia di scatto, visto che questi programmi fanno trascorrere anche 10-15 secondi di tempo tra uno scatto e l’altro.

Cosa che neanche le reflex a pellicola fanno. Ma che costringe il fotografo (si, il fotografo, ecco che mi schiero nuovamente) a riflettere velocemente prima di pensare e scegliere con cura il momento esatto dello scatto. Quel momento, quell’attimo, quella luce non saranno gli stessi dopo 10 secondi. Non ci sono seconde chance date da una raffica di scatti in sequenza….

Ed ecco che la sintesi è compiuta: la magia della camera oscura digitale, la miniaturizzazione dei mezzi (che facilita la penetrazione di certi ambienti e certe situazioni, ridando spontaneità anche ai soggetti ritratti) e la scelta del momento magico del CLICK.

Si, perchè si torna – finalmente – a trattenere il respiro prima del fatidico momento; si torna ad inspirare il fiato e la luce…rilasciando la propria creatività nel magico click.

Forse sono un geek romantico, ma sono convinto che è un bel momento per la fotografia.

E, in fondo, si tratta sempre di raccontare storie. In una nuova lingua.
