Alfons and Jose

As you know, Alfons (one of the founding fathers of Shoot4Change and currently leading S4C Spain Team) is one of the most respected and highly appreciated social documentary photographers in Spain and worldwide.

José Bautista is a Multimedia Producer & Film Editor, Filmmaker, Composer and Sound Designer. He’s also the founder of KanseiSounds and Altamar Films co-founder.

The Sleeping Land is an intimate voyage, a ode to daily routine and an evocative litany and to clarify our perception of unknown everyday 28 Siberian people and their issues.

The Project

One hundred years have passed since the Czarist regime was overthrown by the Russian Revolution of 1917. Yet one hundred and thirteen years have gone by since the Trans-Siberian railway line was inaugurated: almost 10.000 km from Moscow down to eastern Asian Vladivostok bordering the Sea of Japan. In this enormous geographic and human context overlapped by current Russian social fabric, the authors of this independent documentary film lead us through simple, melancholic, mundane or dramatic stories using the train as a metaphor. In essence: the journey through Life itself.

An intimate, epic voyage in which the two documentalists do not intend to thoroughly map modern day Russian society but to paint a much more subtle landscape of personal experiences drawn from the people they encounter daily. These are the protagonists of this incredible adventure describing fragments of their past and present lives and guessing at what the future may hold for them. They speak directly to the camera, reaching out to the spectator, sharing their joys and sorrows. All this takes place in the Russian taiga during a harsh and bitter Siberian winter. Nothing else except the forests and the occasional villages and cities in the middle of nowhere.

The Sleeping Land (La Tierra Dormida) is an ode to daily routine, an evocative litany and at the same time a desperate attempt to update and clarify our perception of unknown everyday Siberian issues as well as those of these far and remote eastern regions. This land has always been part of the authors’ travelling imagery for as long as they can remember. A sleeping frozen land waiting for the icy sting to pass, breaking the glacial silence that accompanies it…

Shoot4Change Spain ha participado en la edición del primer calendario solidario de los Mossos d’Esquadra para recaudar fondos contra el cáncer infantil

Los Mossos d’Esquadra de Cataluña han lanzado el primer calendario solidario oficial en apoyo a la lucha contra el cáncer infantil. La recaudación se destinará a la Associació de Familiars i Amics dels Nens Oncològics de Catalunya (AFANOC) y a la Casa Xuklis, especializada en acoger a las familias que necesitan desplazarse para que sus hijos reciban tratamiento en los hospitales de referencia.

Para la edición de este calendario solidario, del año 2014, ha sido imprescindible la colaboración de  Shoot4Change Spain que ha puesto a disposición del proyecto a todos sus fotógrafos: Davide Camesasca, Alfons Rodríguez, Marco Ansaloni, Katherin Wermke, Xavi Piera, Eva Parey, Gregorio Fulginiti, Cinzia Tagliabue y David Rodríguez.

Durante las 3 semanas de trabajo, varios de los fotógrafos de Shoot4Change Spain también se han encargado de la realización del making of del calendario para dejar reflejada la ilusión con la que se llevó a cabo el proyecto entre todos los participantes.

En las fotografías aparecen agentes de diversas unidades, como la Canina o la Científica, posando en compañía de niños afectados por el cáncer o que ya se han recuperado de la enfermedad, y sus hermanos. En éste también aparecen, de forma esporádica, Àlex Monner y Joana Valpuig actores de la popular serie de TV3 ‘Polseres Vermelles’.

En tan sólo una semana ya se han conseguido recaudar 30.000€, íntegros para AFANOC y la Casa Xuklis, con la venta de las primeras 3.000 unidades. Tras el éxito, los Mossos d’Esquadra han decidido imprimir 3.000 copias más. Este calendario se puede adquirir por 10€ en las tiendas de El Corte Inglés, en los supermercados Gros Mercat y en las comisarías centrales de cada región policial.

Shoot4Change Spain helps  produce the Mossos d’Esquadra first fund-raising calendar in aid of children with cancer.

Catalunya’s Mossos d’Esquadra have launched a fund-raising calendar in aid of children with cancer. The money raised will go to the Associació de Familiars i Amics dels Nens Oncològics de Catalunya (AFANOC) and to Casa Xuklis, which specialises in caring for families who have to travel far from home in order to get the best care for their children.

The NGO Shoot4Change Spain has provided invaluable in producing the calendar through the work of it photographers Davide Camesasca, Alfons Rodríguez, Marco Ansaloni, Katherin Wermke, Xavi Piera, Eva Parey, Gregorio Fulginiti, Cinzia Tagliabue and David Rodríguez.

During the three weeks it took to prepare the calendar, several Shoot4Change Spain photographers also worked on a “making of” which demonstrates the enthusiasm and excitement of everyone involved. 

The pictures show officers from units as diverse as dog handlers and forensics posing with children who have recovered from cancer, along with their brothers and sisters. The actors Àlex Monner and Joana Valpuig from the popular TV3 series Polseres Vermelles also make an appearance.

AFANOC and Casa Xuklis raised €30,000 in a single week through the sale of 3,000 calendars. Encouraged by this initial success, the Mossos d’Esquadra have decided to print 3,000 more. It is available priced €10 at El Corte Inglés, Gros Mercat supermarkets and at all regional police headquarters.

Dopo il grande successo riscosso al Festival Cortona On The Move, la mostra di Alfons Rodriguez, The Third Rider (Il Terzo Cavaliere dell’Apocalisse) arriva a Roma.

Comunicheremo a breve le date precise, ma la sorpresa del giorno è che la presenteremo – completa e in anteprima – a quanti parteciperanno all’inaugurazione della Casa dei Raccontastorie.

Ne parlavamo con Alfons qualche giorno fa ed è stato lo stesso Alfons a proporre di metterla a disposizione per un’occasione così bella: la nascita della nostra casa.

E così, proprio mentre tre grandi casse di legno stavano partendo da Cortona alla volta di Barcellona, è avvenuto il dirottamento verso Roma dove sono arrivate sane salve in via del Mandrione 105…

Domani cominciamo ad appenderli ai muri di “casa”.

E’ una storia forte, un progetto lungo e complesso. Che solo la sensibilità e l’occhio di Alfons Rodriguez potevano raccontare.

WORKSHOP DI DUE GIORNI CON ALFONS RODRIGUEZ, IN COLLABORAZIONE CON SHOOT4CHANGE.

REINVENTARE IL FOTOGIORNALISMO.

Cortona On The Move presenta il workshop di Shoot4change con il nostro grande amico Alfons Rodriguez (responsabile di S4C Spagna).

Come costruire un progetto documentario multimediale con Alfons Rodriguez.

Oggi in tutto il mondo, con le nuove tecnologie, si ha facile accesso alle informazioni. Ma uno sguardo responsabile e impegnato, sia da parte di chi diffonde le immagini che da chi le riceve, è essenziale per non creare una massificazione-spazzatura nel tentare di documentare la nostra realtà attuale. Il workshop si propone di discutere come le tecnologie hanno influenzato il modo di lavorare e puntualizzare le basi per la realizzazione di un progetto fotogiornalistico – documentarista e multidisciplinare, realizzato in diversi paesi e continenti, in situazioni di crisi umanitaria causate da conflitti, malattie, disastri sociali o catastrofi naturali.

Si tratteranno aspetti come ad esempio:

Influenza e valutazione delle nuove tecnologie dell’informazione. L’evoluzione di un giornalista-documentarista.

Progetti per il futuro: researching, documentazione, contatti, itinerario, date, accreditamento…

Stabilire la connessione e applicare una metodologia appropriata per lavorare con le organizzazioni non governative come MSF, ACH-OXFAM, ONG locali, ecc. e le agenzie internazionali come ONU, CE, ecc.

Introdurre i partecipanti a temi quali: affrontare soluzioni tecniche sul campo, fixers, differenti problemi burocratici ed etici.

Si affronterà anche come definire i parametri visivi con contenuto informativo, editing grafico e anche come prendersi cura degli aspetti estetici per portare a termine il lavoro.

Possibilità di diffusione del progetto. La garanzia del metodo multidisciplinare (foto – video – testo – web – esposizione- book).

Si guarderanno esempi proposti dall’autore e i portfoli degli studenti.

In entrambe le sessioni, l’insegnante (con i partecipanti) approfondirà in modo sistematico il lavoro personale, verranno affrontate domande e analizzate le risposte durante tutta la sessione. Inoltre si guarderanno e si valuteranno esempi e casi concreti basati sull’esperienza sul campo del fotografo. I corsi sono tenuti in lingua spagnola ( con un traduttore simultaneo spagnolo – italiano).

Alfons Rodriguez, Fotoreporter – documentarista indipendente e rappresenta Shoot4change Spagna. Il suo lavoro è stato esposto e pubblicato a livello internazionale. Attualmente sta presentando il progetto EL Tercer Jinete (“Il terzo Cavaliere”), in mostra a Cortona, un’analisi complessiva del problema dell’alimentazione nel mondo. Promotore di Caja Azul, un forum di dibattito pubblico di fotografia e di pensiero. How to create a multimedia documentary project

Cortona On The Move presents Shoot4change workshop with Alfons Rodriguez (S4C Spain Representative)

Today all over the world, with new technologies, we have easy access to information, including the production of it. But a responsible and committed look, both by those who distribute the images and those who receive them, is essential in order not to create a trash -massification in documenting our current reality.

The workshop offers an opportunity to discuss how technologies have influenced the way we work and point out the basis for the realisation of a photojournalistic – documentary and multidisciplinary project, made in different countries and continents, in situations of humanitarian crisis caused by conflict, diseases, social disasters or natural disasters.

We will discuss:

The influence and evaluation of new information technologies. The evolution of a documentary journalist.

Plans for the future: researching, documentation, contacts, itinerary, dates, accreditation…

How to establish connections, and to apply an appropriate methodology for working with non-governmental organizations such as MSF, OXFAM-ACH, local NGOs, etc. and international agencies such as the UN, EC, etc.

Introduce participants to issues such as: addressing technical solutions in the field, fixers, different bureaucratic problems and ethical issues.

How to define the visual parameters with informative content, graphic editing and also how to take care of the aesthetics to complete the job.

Possibilities of distributing the project. The guarantee of the multi-disciplinary method (photo – video – text – web – exposure-book).

We will look at examples provided by the author and the portfolios of the students.

The organization of the Festival will help the paying participants to find cheap accommodations.

In both sessions, the teacher (with the participants) will talk about the value of  personal work. Questions will be addressed and answered throughout the session. Also you will watch and evaluate examples and case studies based on the field experience of the photographer.
In case of a cancellation, once the payment of the amount has been done, it will NOT be refunded, unless the chosen teacher is absent or the minimum number of students will not be reached.

Teacher:

Alfons Rodriguez, Photojournalist – independent documentary filmmaker and Shoot4change spanish rappresentative. His work has been exhibited and published internationally. He is currently presenting the project “El Tercer Jinete” (“The Third Horseman”) on show in Cortona, an analysis of the food problem in the world. This work will form the basis of the workshop and the project to work with the participants. The author will also propose old and new projects.

Over the last 15 years he has performed hundreds of documentary reportage, social criticism, current affairs and anthropology in almost ninety countries. His work has been exhibited in many exhibitions inside and outside Spain. He is co-founder of Gea Photowords, an initiative that deals in a global and multidisciplinary problems that plague our planet, along with other photographers, writers, filmmakers and renowned journalists. Promoter of Caja Azul, a forum for public debate about photography and thought. It is part of the Italian organization Shoot 4 Change – is one of its delegates in Barcelona – and Reporters Sans Frontiers. His images and articles have been published in national and international media such as El País, La Vanguardia, National Geographic Magazine, La Repubblica and Il Corriere. He is the author of many individual and collective books and collaborates with international organizations like the United Nations, Oxfam, Medecins Sans Frontieres, University of Barcelona and Action Against Hunger. His work has been recognized with several awards and commendations such as the Banco Sabadell Prize of Photojournalism 2011. The Department of Culture of the Generalitat de Catalunya considered him one of today’s leading photojournalists. His project “El Tercer Jinete” has received a certificate of recognition of excellence in journalism for development, received by the Prince of Asturias, during the VXI Codespa Award.

Since then I kept regular contacts with Alfons and everytime we spoke he was in a different Country: Bangladesh, Burkina Faso, Chad, Democratic Republic of Congo, Guatemala, Philippines, Haiti, India, South Sudan… I lost count but one thing was sure: he never stopped.

Over the time, me and Alfons developed a special friendship built on reciprocal professional respect and mutual appreciation. But most of all, Alfons is one of those documentary photographer who knows better. He knows how to handle delicate situations and how to carry the burden of telling forgotten stories with respect and dignity.

Strong images for an importan project and an important photographer. And I’m proud to announce that Alfons will be among the featured photographers exhibited in the big S4C collective exhibition “Stories4Change” in Rome, opening December 4th 2012.

The Third Rider

The Third Rider of the Apocalypse, hunger, the black horseman, rides cruelly over our planet, today  more than ever.

Seven billion of humans live on Earth, a quantity  that is under some aspects  unsustainable. One in seven is suffering starvation and/or malnutrition.

Climate change, natural disasters,  wars and violence, discrimination, high prices of  basic  food,  biofuel production and distribution of wealth…all these factors  deeply influence  the serious problem of food shortage in the world.

Women and children are among those who suffer most from the causes above mentioned.  They are considered part of  the lowest social class  in many societies of the  poorest countries. Every day 10.000 children die from  starvation.

This situation, however, can be reversed.  If we push all together we’ ll make the rider dismount his saddle.

This documentary project explores the problem of hunger worldwide,  trying to shed light on   causes  and  possible solutions…

FAME E MALNUTRIZIONE

(un progetto di Alfons Rodríguez)

Quest’anno, 2011, il nostro pianeta ha raggiunto 7,000 milioni di abitanti. Una quantità che in alcuni termini comincia ad essere insostenibile. La fame e la malnutrizione è uno di loro. Il cambiamento climatico, le guerre, i prezzi elevati degli alimenti di base e la distribuzione della ricchezza sono tutti fattori che influenzano decisamente il grave problema della carenza di cibo.

Tra tutti quelli colpiti, le donne ei bambini che vivono nella fascia sub-sahariana africani sono i più puniti per i fattori prima citati e in molti casi per la loro condizione di bassa esseri umani.

Ma il problema non si limita all’ Africa.

Anche Asia e America hanno a che fare con  il flagello del Cavaliere Nero, il terzo cavaliere dell’Apocalisse.

Questo progetto cerca di analizzare il problema oggi e di gettare un po’ di luce sulle sue motivazioni e le possibili soluzioni.

HUNGER AND MALNUTRITION IN THE EARTH

This year, 2011, our planet has reached 7.000 million inhabitants. A quantity that in some terms it begins to be untenable. The hunger and the malnutrition is one of them. The climate change, the wars, the high prices of the basic food and the distribution of wealth are all factors that influence decisively the serious problem of the food shortage.
Among all the affected ones, the women and the children who live in the sub-Saharan African band are the most punished for the factors before mentioned and in most cases for their condition of low human beings.
But the problem does not limit itself to Africa.
Asia and America possess also the scourge of the Black Rider, the Third Rider of the Apocalypse.
This project tries to analyze the problem today and to throw something of light on his motives and possible solutions.

In prossimità di una grande mostra fotografica collettiva di S4C che si terrà, proprio a Roma, il prossimo settembre, il fotografo (e membro di S4C) Alfons Rodriguez (http://www.armphoto.com) terrà un workshop S4C il 12-13 settembre 2011 c/o GB Editoria, vicolo Savelli 9.

Il titolo del workshop è PHOTOJOURNALISM IN CRISIS ZONES: BEFORE, DURING, AFTER e tratta un tema assolutamente attuale, anche alla luce delle crisi emergenti e dei nuovi mezzi di comunicazione che consentono una sempre più efficiente pianificazione, realizzazione e diffusione del proprio reportage.

Alfons Rodiguez affronterà, con un taglio pratico e basato sulla sua vasta esperienza internazionale al fianco delle maggiori ONG e in svariati contesti di emergenze umanitarie, il tema del reportage fotogiornalistico nelle zone di crisi sociali ed umanitarie e dividerà il workshop  in due sessioni teoriche nelle quali Alfons tratterà le varie fasi, dalla preparazione/ideazione di un reportage alla realizzazione, editing e diffusione successiva.

Il workshop è rivolto a tutti e sarà tenuto in inglese, spagnolo, italiano (laddove necessario, Alfons Rodriguez sarà affiancato da traduzione simultanea)

There almost constant sounds inside the Hospital. Nurses get in and out, forced by the unstoppable rhythm of the Children’s floor. Only when the trolley used for the Music Therapy goes closer trough the corridor, children and their parents wait impatiently for their turn to make guitar become, just for a few minutes, the only thing inside their rooms. When the illness knocked on that children’s door, world suddenly became a darker place. Now, they admit music changed their lifes.

Music Therapy is  defined as the use of music with healing and therapeutic ends. Its main aim consist on increasing children’s life quality by fostering their skills and make them take important part on the rehabilitation and treatment. The two components on each therapy team are a therapist and a musician.

It’s been proved that emotional health is one of the most important aspects on the treatment of any medical pathology. That’s the reason why music is used with sick people, especially with children, more receptive and much more capable to interact with the musician and with the instruments.

Five thousand euro to draw a smile on ill children’s faces, five thousand to transmit feelings, five thousand to get ill children staying at Hospital have a better life by  showing their hopes and fears through music. This is the amount of  euro that the spanish musician, David Otero, also known as “El Pescao”, raised in benefit of the Music Therapy program for Barcelona’s Hospital “Sant Joan de Déu”. This little big donation, will help therapist and musicians from the “Ressò” association, continue with this task, that has changed so many people’s life.

This report covers many different situations and circumstances on witch this melodic therapy takes place. From  hospitals to a private homes or a school. The main characters: doctors, therapists, ill people and their families, give us their opinions and open a door to hope and new illusions.
