AA

My journey to Esterillos Oeste began last year and I immediatley fell in love with the village and the people.

I decided that this was an ideal place to run a division of S4C. Since camera’s are such a huge luxury item in Esterillos, when I returned to US, S4C began a campaign “Camera’s Wanted” and we asked for camera’s to be donated that would be given to children and used for our workshops. On our last trip we left a Canon Rebel with a young man Patrocinio Gonzales, who loves traveling, photography and journalism, he will run a division of S4C Next Generation.

On my third trip, with the assistance of a great team, Rodney A. Ferrer, Pat Chidester, David Maes, Carol Clayton, Lee Benson and Ozzie Hoppe, Melanie, plus all the kids, we organized a Free Family Portrait Day.

(see the gallery)

A team of local photographers volunteered their time and we just went door to door to each family. We spent time with every family, taking their photos, listening to their stories or sharing food. So our idea of just taking photos turned into something much deeper and fullfilling, two days of getting to know each and forming ever lasting friendships. We were welcomed with open arms and we are so grateful to all the families in Esterillos Oestes to giving us this opportunity.

One of our team members during this project is a writer Carol Clayton who is a traveler, spending a few month in Esterillos. Here is her assestment of this beautiful special place on earth and I couldn’t agree more. – Yelena Futeran/S4C New York City

“Esterillos Oeste is a quaint, sleepy village on the Central Pacific Coast of Costa Rica where there is a powerful energy and feeling of being at one with nature. Esterillos Oeste beach is varied and interesting. There are hills of lush emerald green jungle sweeping down to the beach and every day the rugged landscape changes as strong currents deposit well-worn driftwood along the wide dark sandy beach where you can walk for miles and see nothing other than stunningly beautiful nature.

However, the most amazing part of Esterillos Oeste is its people, known as Ticos. Many have very little by way of material possessions, some often living in abject poverty and yet they are extremely helpful, friendly and welcoming people. Despite setbacks such as often having no electricity or water, or in the rainy season having to cope with their homes being flooded with water and mud, they are nevertheless very happy and content as they know it is family that matters the most. Each Sunday is set aside for church and family life. Part of the culture of Costa Rica is the term ‘Pura Vida’ which translated literally means pure life, and the locals totally live their lives this way.

(see the gallery)

Unfortunately there are very few jobs. Most work is from fishing, housekeeping gardening and cooking. There are a few businesses such as the butcher’s shop, two small markets and several small sodas (local restaurants) one of which is owned and run by Margarita where she has offered great traditional food cooked over a wood burning stove for over 40 years.

Many of the Ticos speak reasonably good English but they also appreciate it if foreign visitors try to speak Spanish. Expats, mainly from America, Canada and England also live here and happily contribute to community events and help those in need whenever they can.

Children play in tidal pools and on the lava rocks, watched over by the magnificent bronze mermaid statute referred to locally as La Sirena. Esterillos Oeste has produced more than its fair share of teenage world class surfers as there is never a shortage of thunderous waves crashing down. It is an ideal place for long walks and horseback riding. Even the skies and clouds seem to take on a color and intensity all of their own, often with spectacular sunrises and sunsets.

The pace here is relaxed as people appreciate the breath-taking natural beauty and wildlife surrounding them such as monkeys, sloths and a myriad of beautiful exotic birds! Iguanas saunter through the huge trees and on the tin roofs of local homes against the backdrop of brightly colored flowers.

So, today we start with Yelena Futeran who, among other things, also launched a S4C Next Generation initiative there (we’ll tell you more soon) and in the meantime, have a look at the fantastic portraits of locals shot by Ozzie Hoppe.

RISULTATI ATTESI:

1)    I partecipanti documentano – attraverso la fotografia – alcune delle attività legate ai progetti di IPADE in corso in Bolivia;

2)    I partecipanti familiarizzano con gli aspetti concreti legati al lavoro di un’ONG internazionale in zone rurali e isolate;

3)    Una mostra fotografica – in Spagna ed in Italia – verrà realizzata con le migliori immagini selezionate dei partecipanti;

4)    Fotografie selezionate dal workshop andranno a comporre l’archivio fotografico di IPADE – per i suoi fini di comunicazione;

http://www.fundacion-ipade.org/

PARTECIPAZIONE:

Avete esperienze in tal senso?

1)    Los/as participantes documentan – a través de la fotografía – algunas de las actividades ejecutadas en el marco del los proyectos de IPADE en Bolivia;

2)    Los/as participantes se familiarizarán con los aspectos concretos relacionados con el trabajo de una ONG internacional en zonas rurales y aisladas;

3)    Realización de una exposición fotográfica – en Bolivia y en España – con las mejores imágenes seleccionadas de los participantes;

4)    Fotografías seleccionadas del workshop formarán parte del archivo fotográfico de IPADE para sus fines de comunicación;

5)    Diseño de un blog con el fin de realizar la exposición/evento accesible a un público lo más amplio posible;

S4C PRESENTS:

“REPORTING THE FIELD WORK OF AN N.G.O.
HOW AND WHY”

Workshop in Reportage in the northern Department of Potosì – Bolivia

By Matteo Bertolino, in collaboration with the NGO “IPADE”

Period: 10-21 July 2011

S4C is organizing a photography workshop on the role of photography in international cooperation. This is to take place in Bolivia. This workshop is being realized with the support of the Spanish NGO IPADE (“Instituto de Promocion y Desarrollo Apoyo to”) and Matthew Bertolino, aid worker, photographer and S4C member living in Bolivia.

Both the practice and concept of “development cooperation” has been around for quite some time and has entered our vocabulary in its own right.

It is amidst the galaxy of acronyms that surrounds the field of international development cooperation that we find one of its key players, the NGO, or non-governmental organisations. Despite their increasing presence over the past decades and the numerous development projects in progress or completed across the world, the public at large still has difficulty in understanding exactly why, how and what an NGO actually does in these so-called “developing countries”. At fault, or to blame, are the sometimes bad or weak communication strategies of the NGO’s, general media disinterest, the low level of critical debate on some of the major global issues, the myths and stereotypes that still (less so now than in the past) accompany the work of NGO’s, or other ideas that cause confusion.

It has been shown that in general, particularly NGOs, tend not to invest in the collection of high quality images capable of giving the visual justice deserved by what are often innovative interventions taking place across the world. Rather they make do with a couple of hasty snaps taken by the project coordinator whilst running from one activity to the other. However, it is fundamental to document international cooperation, its activities and practice, in a more professional manner – not just to make external communication strategies of NGO’s more effective but also to raise awareness and stimulate critical debate on international cooperation, and about the role that NGO’s have to play in it.

GENERAL OBJECTIVE:

To raise awareness – via the use of photography – and create visual stimulants capable of generating critical debate on the role of NGOs in International cooperation.

SPECIFIC WORKSHOP OBJECTIVE:

To bring the participants closer to the concrete reality of the field work of an International NGO (IPADE in Bolivia). The workshop offers participants the opportunity to document projects currently in progress in the rural municipalities where the NGO is active, using photography. At the same time they will also have the possibility of illustrating, via photographic images, the fragments of wealth that can also be found in the country.

EXPECTED RESULTS:

1)    The participants will document some of the activities tied to the IPADE projects currently in progress in Bolivia using photography;

2)    The participants will get to know some of the concrete aspects tied to the work of an international NGO in rural and isolated areas;

3)    A photography exhibition will be realized in both Spain and Italy using some of the best images produced by the participants of the workshop;

4)    Selected photographs will go on to be a part of the photographic archive of IPADE – to be used in future communication projects of the NGO;

5) A blog will be created so as to make the exhibition accessible to as many people as possible.

WORKSHOP LOCATION:

The workshop will take place in the municipalities of “Toro-Toro” and “Acasio”, in the Northern Department of Potosì, Bolivia. These are small rural municipalities, made up of valleys and high mountains, inhabited mainly by Quechua communities (Quechua speakers).

PROGRAM:

The program foresees a number of field visits to the Quechua communities that benefit from IPADE’s programs in the above mentioned municipalities. It will be possible to take part in some of the activities foreseen by IPADE’s projects and, of course, to document the life and the realities faced by the population living in these areas of Bolivia.

You will get to know the technicians and the local IPADE staff that directly manage the activities on the ground. The staff will accompany us throughout our visual journey into what is the reality of a cooperation project.

In the evenings photos taken that day will be reviewed and edited. There will also be the opportunity to discuss and analyze the experiences of the day. At the same time, bit by bit, the images that will finally make up the exhibition are to be selected. Each participant will in fact be asked to tell his/her story through a set of selected photos, his/her reportage on international cooperation and on IPADE’s daily work on the ground.

We will dedicate one entire day to the discovery of Toro-Toro’s natural reserve’s hidden beauty. Toro-Toro is considered the paleontological capital of Bolivia.

IPADE:

Founded in 1987, IPADE is an International NGO based in Madrid. IPADE’s interventions are predominantly concerned with sustainable production, sustainable tourism, sustainable Energy as well as health and hygiene. So far they have realized more than 200 projects in 26 countries across the globe. In South America IPADE is present in the Andes where it is working across Ecuador, Bolivia and Peru, on a programme that has been financed by the Spanish Agency for Cooperation (AECID).

The participation fee is €600. This includes photographic assistance and support throughout the entire duration of the workshop, the review and selection of images, the main internal transfers, the entrance and guided visit of the park of “Toro-Toro, printing costs and the costs of the organization of the planned exhibitions. Room and board are to be borne by the participant (Room and board in rural areas approximately € 10 per day and about € 25 in Cochabamba).

Ecco alcune informazioni logistiche:
