Of course, our hearths go to the victims and their families. And to the thousand volunteers that are working 24/7 right when I’m writing this.

We decided not to step in at this time. It’s not a job for S4C to take photos in such a situation. Now it’s time to work and bring relief to those who suffer.

There will be time to tell stories once the spotlight of major media will fade off.

We have many friends in the area. Luckily they are allright. Some of them are Civil protection (ANPAS) volunteers, such as Andrea Cardoni (with whom we lately produced, together with Andrea Ranalli, the web doc about – odd – the other Earthquake of l’Aquila).

Andrea is working around the clock and we are very close to him. Everynow and then he uses Instagram to take snapshots of what it means to be there now. A good way to feel close to us and to let us feel close to him

A good and wise way to use Internet in these circumstances.

Un’amicizia ed una stima nate e coltivate online, su Facebook, attraverso S4C e le attività (sempre in remoto) che ci hanno visto al fianco in questi anni. Oggi ci siamo incontrati per la prima volta.

Ed è sempre magnifico constatare la bellezza delle connessioni creative che Internet favorisce. Fuor di metafora, è vero. D’accordo, si dice “simili con simili”.

Ma se non fosse per Internet, dite quel che volete, non sarebbe possibile. Prossima tappa: Malawi! Vero Stefano e Francesca?

Organizzeremo un workshop S4C con Africa Wildtruck di Stefano e Francesca che conoscono quei posti come pochi…

KABUL (AFP)–Protests erupted outside the main U.S. military base in Afghanistan and in Kabul on Tuesday over allegations that foreign troops had set fire to copies of the Quran, police said.
Thousands of protesters besieged Bagram airbase, north of Kabul, throwing petrol bombs which set fire to a gate.
A local police official said more than 2,000 people were demonstrating outside the sprawling U.S.-run base.
“They are demonstrating over the burning of copies of the Quran inside the base,” the official said.
Sidiq Siddiqi, an interior ministry spokesman, confirmed the demonstration and said reinforcements had been sent to the area–about 60 kilometers north of the capital–to prevent possible violence.
The U.S. commander in Afghanistan, Gen. John Allen, said he had ordered an investigation into a report that troops at Bagram “improperly disposed of a large number of Islamic religious materials which included Qurans.”
“I offer my sincere apologies for any offense this may have caused, to the president of Afghanistan, the government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, and most importantly, to the noble people of Afghanistan,” he said.
Another protest by about 500 people broke out in the Pul-e-charkhi district of Kabul not far from major North Atlantic Treaty Organization bases on the Jalalabad road, police spokesman Ashamat Estanakzai said.
“The police have the crowd in control, it is not violent,” he said.
Similar protests have in the past turned violent in Afghanistan, an extremely devout Islamic nation where an insult to the religion carries the death penalty.
About 10 people were killed and dozens of others were injured during days of unrest unleashed last April over the burning of a Quran by U.S. pastor Terry Jones in Florida.

The reason is that I’ll soon start a short journey to Afghanistan to visit and see wht the USA-NATO forces are doing in view of the announced 2014 withdrawal.

It’s going to be an intense and unique experience and my aim is to spot at least traces of the future Afghanistan. The Country that will have to bear it alone and cope with a new life after 2014.

Signs are not entirerly encouraging so far. Security is still a major issue, as well as the percepetion of Afghan people about the “foreign” presence in their Country.

I’m not sure what I’ll find. But I know I’ll keep my eyes open and I’ll try to go around the corner to see what lies behind the Wall.

Covering an ongoing war is not pure S4C style, I know. But you know what they say: “If it bleeds, it Leads”. Only those strong and cruesome stories hit the headlines and the frontpages of mainstream medias.

Very little is known, and seen, of the rest.

I’m not saying I’ll do it right but I can honestly tell you I’ll try…

Tante ore, divertenti, stancanti, produttive, per installare una rassegna di scatti…scorretti…sull’invisibilità sociale. Scorretti, perchè rappresentano volti e situazioni che facciamo finta di non vedere.

In effetti più che di invisibilità sociale si potrebbe tranquillamente parlare di cecità sociale. Siamo noi che non vogliamo vedere.

Sto passando comunque qualche giorno in Puglia, a Martina Franca. E tra un incontro e l’altro, ho conosciuto Stefania Zizzi del noto blog Une Histoire de Luxe.

Due mondi solo apparentemente distanti ma in realtà accomunati dall’interesse per uno storytelling emozionale ed intenso.

Ne è nata una chiacchierata estiva tra i trulli della Valle d’Itria.

I’m often asked what is that triple-decker I hold around when I shoot.  It’s big, it’s heavy and it looks like is out of a Transformer episode.

Well, it actually is! It’s a camera (a Nikon D700) with a P7000 mounted on top (on the flash hot shoe) for the video recording. Add to it an external mic and that’s it! You got a perfect tool to shoot photos and videos at the same time.

Why?

Because sometimes a photo is not enough and you feel like giving your readers the full story: to let them see what you saw, not only with a shot but with video and audio as well.

What I do  often, is inclining the videocamera a little bit toward the photo camera. A small portion of the lens will fall in the scene and that’s made on purpose. I like showing a real backstage experience.

Sometimes (often, I’d say) “thinking – and shooting – different” give unpredictable and interesting results.

So, here’s the “Transformer”, what do you think?

283 di loro rimasero in fondo al mare…

Non se ne parla da tanto tempo eppure…

Un piacevole, e fortuito, incontro degli ultimi giorni mi ha fatto (ri)imbattere in questo episodio.

Ho incontrato gli autori di una splendida inchiesta, che hanno tra l’altro girato un documentario su questa storia ( Guido M. Coscino e Giuliano La Franca). Ne parleremo tra qualche giorno.

Alex started inviting the guest to use their creativity (on paper) to elaborate their vision and idea of “house”. Some drew it, some wrote touching words. They all partecipated and accepted to share their thoughts with the others.

The guys of Artefacting are so great in this. They sparkle something magic, with art and creativity, in those difficult situation where you really do not expect to think about art. Very cool….

E’ stata una bella esperienza, a detta sia del docente che, soprattutto, dei partecipanti. Soddisfatti non solo dell’alta professionalità di Federico Tovoli e della sua passione nel trasmettere suggestioni utili per il reportage sociale, ma anche per lo splendido clima che si è creato e per…l’ambientazione non banale.

Nello spirito del formare nuovi fotoreporetrs sociali che un domani andranno a  documentare piccole o grandi storie per “dar voce a chi non ce l’ha”  il workshop ha infatti avuto una forte impostazione  pratica ed è stato incentrato sul documentare, per un pomeriggio, la vita – spesso disagiata – degli studenti fuori sede dell’ateneo pisano, costretti a vivere in spazi abitativi ristretti peraltro molto costosi.

Gli iscritti al workshop hanno visitato – grazie anche al supporto del Comitato Provinciale ARCI – le case di vari studenti che vivono questa condizione, documentandone la storia attraverso la ritrattistica, gli spazi vuoti vissuti e un po’ di vita quotidiana.
